OBJECTIVES By the end of presentation learners will be able to: Define basic human needs. Define World Health Organization. Explain model of conceptual framework for generic BS N program. Define nursing and nursing practice Define goal of nursing process. And Identify historical perspective of nursing process
Human Needs Needs are something that are necessary for an organism to live a healthy life Distinguished from wants Deficiency causes a clear adverse outcome: a dysfunction or death
Human Needs Three types of Needs Objective/Physical E.g. Food, Shelter, security etc … 2. Subjective/ Psychological e.g. Self-esteem, Affection etc.. 3. Self-fulfillment needs e.g. self-actualization
Maslow's hierarchy of human needs American psychologist Professor of Psychology at Columbia University Creator of Maslow's hierarchy of needs A five stage triangle assumes that a person attempts to satisfy the more basic needs before directing behavior toward satisfying upperlevel needs
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs 6
Basic Human Needs Maslow,s hierarchy of needs is based on theory that something will be called basic needs if : Those needs are not met – cause illness Those needs are met - can prevent illness Those needs are an indicator of health/wellness There is sense of loss if those needs are’nt met There is satisfaction if those needs are met
10 Basic Human Needs Clean environment Adequate supply of water Clothing Nutritious food Shelter Health care Communication Fuel and lighting (Energy) Access to education Cultural and spiritual engagement

Nursing and nursing practice Definition: “It is the diagnosis and treatment of human responses to actual or potential health problems” (ANA 1980 ) Nursing is the art and science that involves working with individual, families, and communities to promote wellness of body, mind, and spirit.
Nurses practice in variety of setting, in hospitals, administration and other health care agencies Standards for practice are important as objectives guidelines for nurses to provide care and criteria for evaluating care When standard are clearly defined, client may be assured that they are receiving high quality care 21 Nursing practice
It requires effective use of nursing process It requires that the helping relationship be the nature of the client-nurse interaction It require nurses to fulfill professional responsibilities 22 Standards of Nursing practice
Nursing Process A systematic problem solving approach used to identify, prevent and treat actual or potential health problems and promote wellness. It involves the following steps Assessment Nursing Diagnosis Planning Implementation Evaluation
25 Assessment Gather Data Subjective Data----SS (Interview) Objective Data----OO (Observe) Assessment is the process of gathering and examining/Analyzing data to get the necessary facts. SS---- Subjective data are stated by client (symptoms) OO- --- Objective data are observed & measured by examiner (signs )
26 Nursing Diagnosis Definition: Analyzing data to identify actual or potential problems. Problem may be a) Actual b) Potential or High risk
27 Planning Definition: The process of setting goals and developing a plan of action. The setting of Goal is based on Nursing diagnosis Goal / Expected outcome - Short Term Goal (STG) Long Term Goal (LTG) STG Outcomes achievable in a few days or 1 week LTG Desirable outcomes that take weeks or months to achieve goal for clients with chronic health problems
28 Evaluation Definition: The process in which nurses determine whether a client has reached a goal. OR It is the analysis of the client’s response which helps to determine the effectiveness of nursing care.
Goals of Nursing process It is to identify a client ’s health care status, and actual and potential health problems, to establish plans to meet the identified needs, and to deliver specific nursiong intervention to address those needs. An organizational framework for the practice of nursing Orderly, systematic ,central to all nursing care Encompass (cover) all steps taken by the nurse in caring for a patient
Nursing process is: Continuous progression from one point to another to achieve a specific goal It provides the creative and organizational structure and framework for nursing care It identify client health care needs, determine priorities of care goals and expected outcome Providing nursing intervention designed to meet these needs Evaluate the effectiveness of nursing care in achieving client goals 30 Goals of Nursing process
The nursing process has traditionally been defined as a systematic method for assessing health status, diagnosing health care needs, formulating a plan of care, initiating the plan and evaluating the effectiveness of the plan The term nursing process was first introduced by Lydia Hall in 1955O.(Observation, Administration of care and Validation.) Dorthy Johnson (1955), Ida Orlando (1961), and Ernestine Wiedenbach (1963) introduced a three step of nursing process model into nursing education and practice 31 Historical perspective of nursing process
1967 Lois Knowles presented a process model that she called the five Ds. Discover, Delve, Decide, Do And Discriminate. The first two phases nurse collect data and select a plan of action (decide) and carries it out (do) and nurse establishes health care priorities (discriminate) 32 Historical perspective of nursing process
In 1973 the ANA published the standards of Nursing practice which describe five step nursing process 33 Historical perspective of nursing process
