Google glasses WEARABLE COMPUTERS :

INTRODUCTION: Google Glass is a wearable computer integrated with an optical head mounted display. Google Glass is a relatively new product and is not open to regular consumers, just developers and specially selected testers. Google Glass is currently being developed in Google’s “Project Glass”. Google Glass displays information to the user in a hands free format. The user wears the glasses and communicates with it through voice commands and gestures and can also use the head mounted track pad. This new technology is significant because of its innovative features, such as its unique 5 megapixel camera that is capable of capturing 720P quality video from a POV (point of view) standpoint, "It is the closest you get to the idea of the eye as a camera” (Walker, D). Other features include Wifi and bluetooth connectivity, 16 gigabits of flash storage, 1 gigabyte of RAM, a 640×360 pixel display, and many more when connected to a users smart phone through the Google MyGlass phone app (the mobile app allows Google Glass to utilize a smartphones data connection for information streaming ).

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: Google Glass is the name of a new technology Google is developing that basically allows you to view things you would normally see on a smart phone through a pair of glasses, as well as do much more. Google glass is futuristic a gadget we have seen in recent times. A useful technology for all kind of people including handicapped/ disabled. AIM: The applications could be endless: putting on your glasses in the morning as you eat breakfast, your map tells you there is heavy traffic on the route to work.On the drive to the office you pass a Starbucks and a Special Offer on coffee pops up on your screen. In the office, you frame people in your screen and Google+ them to see their profiles. All the while the earphones pipe through your favourite music, only pausing to allow a steady stream of phone calls, targeted adverts and sponsored messages.

OBJECTIVE : Our objective of project glass product would be hands-free displaying of information currently available to most smart phone users , and allowing for interaction with internet via natural language voice commands. These glasses will have combined features of virtual reality and augmented reality.

RISK ANALYSIS: The manufacturing quality overall: Many of Glass users have shown their discomfort with Glass not being the best conductor and transmitter of sound waves. For this reason, the quality of sound emitted by the device is not the best. The device largely requires the user to be in a place with little or no disturbances, or preferably in a quiet environment.Being a voice activated device, this may be Glass's biggest limitation, if you are trying to communicate with the device in a noisy environment. Battery life: This wearable technology has an estimated battery life of an absolutely dreadful 3-4 hours. For a device that is hands free and usable though out the day, this is a very short battery life. Price range: This is not an unusual topic when it comes to the latest technology, so high prices can be understandable. The Google Glass is sold to the public at a price of $1500. This is a relatively high amount to the middle class and especially the lower class . Command confusion: The Google Glass is a voice activated device. It therefore relies on proper pronunciation of words while giving commands.

RISK ANALYSIS contd… Camera: The camera on Glass is highly sensitive to the position of ones face while capturing photos and videos . Applications: There have been many complaints from users of Glass that there are not enough applications for the device   . Health risk: Glass has raised concerns over its said effect on the eyes. Such concerns are mainly centered on the aspect of pain in the eye caused by wearing the eyewear. Distractions: Using Glass can easily take your concentration away from your surrounding environment. Cultural limitations and acceptance: Unlike other forms of technology, Google Glass is not yet universally accepted. Some countries that view this device as a spy-like gadget do not condone its use within their boundaries.

METHODOLOGY: Google Glass will communicate with other mobile phones via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth and display contents on the video screen and respond to the voice commands of the user . The video camera is sensible to the environment and it recognizes objects and people around. Most of the working of the Glass depends on user’s voice commands . Google Glass contains the fundamental bits of any computer, including a CPU, sensors such as GPS, speakers, microphone and battery, to which are added a tiny projector and a prism that redirects the light onto your retina. Each component is neatly embedded in the frame. To keep the device as light as possible, most of the processing will actually take place in the cloud (like it does with Apple’s Siri), so a good mobile broadband signal is essential.

This is also called as Bone-Induction concept. The clarity of the sound is also pretty good as compared to normal headphones or speakers. - There are many apps such as news related and direction related apps that are available and the delivery of these apps is done in a totally innovative way. Moreover app developers can create more and more apps for this device

CONCLUSON: Google glasses are basically wearable computers that use the evolving familier technologies that bring the sophestication and ease of communication and information access even for the physically challenged class of people that literally could not use general way of palmtops and mobiles.
