Classification of rocks Presented by mam Swethane GRADE 10: Geography

Three significant types of Rocks Three significant types of Rocks Igneous rock Sedimentary rock Metamorphic rock. Figure 1: An image showing the most common types of rocks ( Mahai , 2024)

Igneous Rock Igneous rock is the one that solidifies and crystalizes from a molten state. It forms from magma which is a molten rock beneath the earth’s surface. As the magma emerges into the earth’s surface it is called lava. Igneous rocks have different textures depending on the texture, composition, cooling rate, and mineral content. 1. Granite 2. Basaltic 3. Diotre

Metamorphic rock Any igneous or sedimentary rock can be transformed into a metamorphic rock by undergoing pressure and increased temperature. Metamorphic rocks are more compact to one another and thus resistance to weathering and erosion. 1.Slate 2. Marble 3. Gneiss

Sedimentary rock Sedimentary rocks are formed through the accumulation and compression of the sediments. These are the only rocks that can provide valuable information about earth’s history Examples of Sedimentary rocks 1. Limestone 2. Sandstone. 3. Shale
