How do you describe the distribution of earthquake epicenter, active volcano and mountain ranges?
What do the arrows in the map indicate? Are all plates moving on the same directions? PLATE TECTONIC MAP
The arrows on the map tells the direction of movement of each plate. Each plate is slowly moving relative to each other, causing geologic events to happen along their boundaries. PLATE TECTONIC MAP
Lesson : Types of plate boundaries
OBJECTIVES Describe the movement of each plate enumerate the three types of plate boundaries realize the importance of readiness and alertness during disasters brought about by the movement of plates.
CONVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY TRANSFORM PLATE BOUNDARY DIVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY What are the three types of plate boundaries?
How does each plate moves?
CONVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY When two tectonic plates move toward each other and collide, they form a convergent plate boundary or also known as destructive plate boundary .
CONVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY As to plates collide, a collision zone is created and one of the leading edges of plate will be subducted and destroyed, that’s why its also known as destructive plate boundary.
3 types of collision CONVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY
OCEANIC-CONTINENTAL PLATE BOUNDARY In oceanic-continental boundary, the oceanic crust converges with continental crust, the denser oceanic plate moves beneath the continental plate. This process is called subduction that occurs at the oceanic trenches.
Mt. Pinatubo lying at the plate boundary between continental Eurasian plate and oceanic Philippine plate Continental-Oceanic
Continental-continental convergent plate boundary When two continents meet head on, neither is subducted because the continental rocks are relatively light, and like two colliding ice bergs resist downward motion. No subduction happen .
Eurasian plate and Indian plate converge each other forming the Himalaya Mountain Rang Eurasian plate and Indian plate converge each other forming the Himalayan Mountain Rang
Oceanic-oceanic convergent plate boundary The older, more dense oceanic crust subducts under younger oceanic crust. This results into formation of trenches.
Philippine plate and Pacific plate converge forming Marianas Trench
Trenches - type of excavation or depression in the ground
DIVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY Divergent plate boundaries are locations where plates are moving apart from one another, it’s also known as constructive plate boundary.
DIVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY As two plates move apart, it creates a zone of tension and form a gap where molten materials will emerge and solidify forming geologic features such as volcanoes or mountains
Mid-Atlantic Ridge that separates Iceland caused by the movement of the North American and Eurasian plate
Another example is the East African Rift Valley . It was formed around 25 to 30 million years ago where the African plate is pulling away from the Arabian plate
TRANSFORM FAULT PLATE BOUNDARY Transform fault plate boundary is also known as conservative margins . Plates slide past each other, so that the relative movement is horizontal.
TRANSFORM FAULT PLATE BOUNDARY In this type of plate boundary, no plate margins are being destroyed nor formed , rather it forms mostly the shaking of the ground known as earthquakes.
Example is the moving plates that meet in western California; the boundary between them is the San Andreas fault . The Pacific plate (on the west) moves northwestward relative to the North American plate (on the east), causing earthquakes along the fault.
