Human Reproduction The human reproductive system is not essential for individual survival, but it is necessary for the continuation of the species. It produces gametes (sex cells) and hormones that control sexual development.

Functions of the Male Reproductive System Produces and maintains sperm. Produces male sex hormones (androgens). Produces secretions for sperm transport. Transfers and deposits sperm in the female reproductive system.

Main Parts Testes Located in the scrotum. Produce sperm and the hormone testosterone. Contain seminiferous tubules where sperm are made. Seminiferous Tubules Contain two cell types: Spermatogonia: Cells that develop into mature sperm. Sertoli Cells: Support and nourish developing sperm. Leydig Cells Found between the tubules; they produce testosterone.
