CHAPTER 2 REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES AND STUDIES

As strongly disclosed by Hutten (2022), reading takes various types wherein the readers employ the skimming technique as overviews are laid down in advance to determine materials of vital interest to them. The fact that skimming has its origin from modern English terminology much as “ kimmen ” which means clear, to throw in a gliding path materials not of immediate interest to the readers themselves. The viewpoint advanced by Amsel (2022) is germane to this foregoing citation considering the fact that reading activities can be categorized as scanning by finding specific information quickly through the location of facts to answer questions profound by the readers for reason that its etymological origin is from Greek word “ skadalon ” denoting trap in its literal connotation.

By all means, a critical type of reading carefully considers the main ideas in making correct conclusions uprooted from magazines, articles, books, advertising materials or from the screen of computer units by looking deeper into the background of the author, as his gender, age, educational attainment and his knowledge of the subject as strongly cited by Bialek (2022), in her write up, there is much consideration in dealing into the etymological meaning of critical type as originated from Greek word, “ kritikos ” which means judge involving favorable or unfavorable writings. A similar line of thinking has been concerned by Baird (2022) regarding analytical reading as originated from analytical reading as originated from old Greek word “ analytikos ” which literally means analysis or analytics by giving careful attention to each word and its importance in relation to other words in the sentence or paragraph. Relatively, certain statements of key ideas should be analytically read possibly with bearings on mathematical, problems and scientific formulas.

Related Studies The findings of Albertus (2021) strengthened further the foregoing study when she revealed among others that freshmen at Alabawa High School excelled in scanning as evidenced by 75 percent whereas the remaining percentage as represented by 25 percent were found deficient in skimming, exploratory, critical and analytical types of reading. In the institutional research made by Braddock (2022) along formative years in reading techniques among selected pupils in Oklahoma country school, reveals as exploratory proficiency as attested by 65 percent whereas 35 percent were found deficient in skimming, scanning, critical and analytical forms in their reading activities.
