February 8 th Mood & Tone Mood is the feeling that a story creates in the reader. Tone is an author’s attitude toward the subject or audience of the story. How does tone change the meaning of the phrase “Nice job?”
How Does a Writer Create Mood? The setting, and use of descriptive words, all work to create the mood of a story. The mood always concerns YOU, the reader.

Tone Tone is the writer’s attitude toward the subject or audience of the story. Look for clues in the language the writer uses to identify how the writer feels about the subject.

Tone vs. Mood Tone Mood Writer-centered The attitude a writer takes towards the subject or the reader. Reader-centered The overall feeling or atmosphere created by a work literature. Both convey an emotion(s) through words.
Purpose of the Author -An wuthor’s purpose to his reason for or intent writing. - An Author’spurpose may be to: 1. Inform the reader- information 2. Entertain the reader- enjoyment 3. Persuade the reader- convince
Inform the reader- information Example: “Our home planet Earth is a rocky, terrestrial planet. It has a solid and active surface with mountains, valleys, canyons, plains and so much more. Earth is special because it is an ocean planet. Water covers 70% of Earth's surface.”
Inform the reader Example: The origin of candy can be traced to the ancient Egyptians who combining fruits and nuts with honey. Around the same time, Greeks used honey to make candied fruits and flowers. First modern candies were made in 16th century and sweet manufacturing developed rapidly into an industry during the early 19th century.
Entertain the reader- Enjoyment Example: “Once upon a time in a magic kingdom, there lived a great hero. He was about to set out on a dangerous quest!” “A story about three friends that go on a crazy adventure.”
Persuade the reader- convice Example: “Every house should have a dog. They are cute. loyal, and will protect ylour house.” “ Children should not be allowed to go outside at night. It is not safe for the kids to roam around. They should be either resting or studying in preparation for the next day class.”

Junk foods should be taken out of school menus because they affect your body and mind in negative ways
