Allusions
What is an Allusion Allusions are a figure of speech that references famous people, places, events and literary works . Allusions are left unexplained and are often indirect, so it is up to the reader to piece together the meaning of an allusion using their own knowledge or research. Allusions are either implied or directly stated.
Examples Jane followed her white rabbit and unraveled her musical talent. - Alludes to the novel Alice in Wonderland where the white rabbit led Alice to a life-changing adventure.
Examples You can’t save everyone; you’re not Wonder Woman . - this directly refers to the superhero from the comic book series Wonder Woman
Examples They called him a Grinch for hating Christmas songs. - Refers to Dr. Seuss’s classic story of ‘How the Grinch stole Christmas’
Examples They say chocolate is his Kryptonite. - alludes to Superman’s only weakness.
Types of Allusions You are carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders (Atlas in myth) - Meaning you are taking on too many responsibilities. Your backyard is a Garden of Eden (Biblical Allusion) - Meaning your backyard is beautiful and large. You’re a regular Einstein (Historical figure) - Meaning you are a genius.
