14. Hello.Im Anandi gopal,first women to study aboard and obtain medical degree. Today let me tell you struggle story of my success.

15. I was born on 31 st March 1865 as Yamuna joshi in kalyan,a small town near Mumbai.I was married when I was 9 years old to Gopal Rao and my name was changed to Anandi.Education of girls was not common then and I could barely read Marathi before my marriage.After marriage my husband started to teaching me and enrolled in missionary school but it did not work as we had to move from kalyan.After my rapid progress,my husband was insistent to acquire higher education.

16. In those days in India female doctors were not available.Many women unwilling to approach male doctors.I myself had lost my infant son when I was fourteen due to lack of medical facility.So I decided that would like to be a doctor. Mrs.Carpenter of Roselle,New Jersey came to know my story and offered to host me in the USA.I alone had to move to America as Gopal rao was not able to get job there.

17. After many opposition and criticism in June 1883 I reached America.There were many things strange to me like their dressing,their lifestyle,food habits were quite different.

18. Its question time What made Anandibai to decide that she would like to become a doctor? When and where Anandibai born and what was her early name? How and when Anandibai reached America?

19. I joined Womens college in Philadelphia and was offered scholarship of $ 600 for the three year. The room provided there have no proper fireplace and emitted lot of smoke which had serious effect on my health,I had to suffer from cough and constant temperature but some how managed to complete final exams.At my convocation I got standing ovation for being a first woman doctor of India,it was the most rewarding movement of my life.

20. Due to my ill health I was admitted in Womens hospital in Philadelphia,as i was suffering from tuberculosis doctors advised me to return to India.

Her return to India The journey back home took a further toll on Anandis health as doctors on ship refused to treat a brown women.On reaching India stayed at her cousin place in pune to get ayurvedic treatment but refused to give treatement saying she had crossed boundaries of society . To,this day,she is an inspiration to Indian girls,The Maharashtra government has a fellowship in her name for young women working on womens health
