POLYGONS Quarter 1 – Week 1

Learning Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to: Define a polygon. Classify polygon according to its sides and as regular or irregular. Name, describe, and compare regular and irregular polygons and polygons with 5, 6, 8, or 10 sides based on measurements of sides and angles Draw triangles, quadrilaterals and polygons with 5, 6, 8, or 10 using a ruler, protractor, and a compass

UNLOCKING CONTENT VOCABULARY Polygon Equilateral Polygon Equiangular Polygon Regular Polygon Irregular Polygon

POLYGON closed figure bounded by line segments that meet only at their end points. The figures below are polygons. They are closed, plane figures, made of line segments, and the segments intersect only at their endpoints.

POLYGON Not a PLANE figure Sides do not intersect at their endpoints. Any shape that has CURVE Any shape that has CURVE Are the following shapes POLYGON ? NO!

EQUILATERAL POLYGON a polygon whose sides are all congruent.

EQUIANGULAR POLYGON a polygon whose angles are all congruent.

REGULAR POLYGON a polygon that is equilateral and equiangular.

IRREGULAR POLYGON a polygon which sides and angles are not equal.

PARTS OF A POLYGON A B C SIDE – line segment that forms the boundary of a polygon. It connects two vertices (corners) of the polygon. VERTICES: SIDES: A B C

PARTS OF A POLYGON A B C INTERIOR ANGLE – angles formed inside the polygon by two adjacent sides meeting at a vertex. INTERIOR ANGLES:       A polygon is named using its vertices .

LESSON ACTIVITY:

Identify the parts of the polygon: Name of Polygon Name of Sides Name of Interior Angles

Identify the parts of the polygon: Name of Polygon Name of Sides Name of Interior Angles

Name, Describe and Compare Regular and Irregular Polygons

What do you know about a SQUARE? What can you say about its sides? All sides are EQUAL. How do you describe its interior angles? All interior angles are EQUAL. A square is an example of REGULAR POLYGON.

Solving the Measure of Each Interior Angle of a Regular Polygon Number of Triangles Formed in a Polygon Where is the number of sides Sum of Interior Angles of a Polygon Measure of Each Interior Angles of a Polygon

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT

I. FILL IN THE BLANKS Fill in the blank with the correct word to make the statement true.

I. FILL IN THE BLANKS __________ are closed plane figures that are formed by straight line segments that meet only at their endpoints . ___________ polygons are polygons with equal measure of sides . Polygons whose interior angles are congruent are called _______________. __________ are polygons with all of its sides and angles equal. __________ are quadrilaterals with four right angles & have all sides equal. __________ is a five-sided polygon with equal sides and equal angles. __________ are polygons that have non-congruent sides. __________ is an eight-sided polygon with unequal sides. __________ is a three-sided polygon with equal sides. The polygon with 10 equal sides is called __________________.

II. Use the polygon to answer the following questions: If side BC = 10 cm, how long is side AE? How many triangles can be formed in the figure? What is the measure of ∠CBA? What is the sum of the measures of ∠CBA and ∠CDE? What is the sum of the interior angles of the regular pentagon ABCDE?

II. Use the polygon to answer the following questions: C A E R Name of Polygon _____________ Vertices: ____, ____, ____, ____ Name of Sides ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ Name of Interior Angles ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________
