NURSING AUDIT Is a detailed review and evaluation of selected clinical records by qualified professional personnel to ident,examine or verify the performance of certain specified aspects of nursing care. Thus it identified deficiencies in the patients condition or status and lacking properties of the nursing service that may have led to deficiencies.
Types of Audit 1.Financial audit-It is historically oriented,independent evaluation performed for the purpose of attesting to the fairness,accuracy and reliability of financial data. 2.Operational audit-Future oriented,systematic and independent.Evaluates organizational activities . 3.Department review audit-It evaluates the adequate of controls,safeguarding of assets, efficient use of resources, compliance with related laws and regulations. 4.Intergrated audit-Is a combination of an operational audit, department review and audit application controls review.
Ct. It allows for a very comprehensive examination of a functional operations. 5.Investigative audit-Takes place as a result of report of unusual activity on the part of an individual or a department.It is usually focused on specific aspects of the work of a department or individual. 6.Follow-up audit-Designed to evaluate corrective action that has been taken on the audit issues reported in the original report.
Types of Auditors Internal Auditors-Are external auditors who are employees of the organization who perform the auditing process. External Auditors-Qualified persons who have to certify the annual profit and loss account and prepare a balance sheet after careful examination of the relevant books of accounts and documents.

Ct. Helps in comparison of the actual practice to standards of care Analyzes actual practice findings More accurate data for planning corrective action Disadvantages The clients problems are identified after discharge The focus of evaluation is directed away from ongoing care
2.Concurrent Audit Performed during ongoing nursing care. The evaluation are conducted on behalf of patients who are still undergoing care. It includes assessing the patiently the bedside in relation to pre-dertemied criteria, interviewin the staff responsible for this care and reviewing the patients records and care plan.
Advantages Indications of problems at time of care Provision of mechanism for identifying patients needs during care. Provision of a mechanism for communicating on the behalf of a patient.

Audit Committee Prior to any audit committee formation,have at least a team of five members with interest in quality assurance,clinical competent and be team player. Maximum of 10 patients each month is recommended and auditor should spend around 15 minutes in each patient
Audit as a Tool for Quality Control outcome audit End results of care,it determines the results that occurred as a result of specific nursing intervention. Example of outcome audit is duration of hospital stay.
