Species
interactions
are the ways in which different
species interact with each other
within an ecosystem.
These interactions can have
significant impacts on the structure
and function of the ecosystem.

TYPES OF SPECIES

COMPETITON1.
Competition the interaction of
individuals that vie for a
common resource that is in
limited supply.
Interspecific
competition -
Competiton between
different species.
Intraspecific
competition -
Competition within
the same species.

2. PREDATION
Predation is when one
organism of 1 species
(predator) hunts and eats
another (prey).
HERBIVORES
CARNIVORES
(plant-eaters)
(meat-eaters)

3. PARASITISM
one organism, the parasite,
derives nourishment from
another organism, its host,
which is harmed in the process
but does not usually kill hosts
Obligate parasites -
totally dependent on
the host to complete
its life cycle
Facultative
parasite - not
completely
dependent
Based on parasites interaction with the host and life cycles

3. PARASITISM
one organism, the parasite,
derives nourishment from
another organism, its host,
which is harmed in the process
but does not usually kill hosts
Ectoparasites -
parasites that live on
the surface of the
host
Endoparasite - live
inside the host
(bacteria, viruses,
fungi, and protozoa).
Based on place of presence of parasite

4. COMMENSALISM
a relationship between two
organisms in which one
benefits and the other derives
neither benefit nor harm.
5. AMMENSALISM
a relationship between two living
things where one is harmed, and
the other is not affected at all.

6. MUTUALISM
both species benefit from the
interaction.

Resource
Partitioning
is a strategy where different species
specialize in different aspects of a
resource to avoid direct competition.
This can involve using different parts
of the resource, consuming it at
different times, or inhabiting different
areas.

HABITAT
PARTITIONING
Species use different
habitats within the
same ecosystem.
RESOURCE PARTITIONING STRATEGIES

Tarsier
BOHOL SPECIES
Monitor Lizard
Wild Boar
live in dense forest areas
found in the forests, streams, and wetlands
on the ground

TEMPORAL
PARTITIONING
Species use
resources at
different
times.
RESOURCE PARTITIONING STRATEGIES

Hyenas
Lion
usually hunt and feed during the day
more active at night and often scavenge
or hunt during the evening

BEHAVIORAL
PARTITIONING
Variations in behavior can
lead to different resource
usage. One species might
hunt in open spaces, while
another prefers dense cover.

By reducing competition and
promoting species coexistence,
resource partitioning supports
high levels of biodiversity.

Species interactions drive
evolutionary processes,
such as natural selection and
niche specialization.
