RESEARCH TOPIC It’s strengths; It has Population – Neonates Independent variables – Risk factors. Dependent variables – Severe hyperbilirubinemia It clearly state what the research is about. It is of good length. The relationship between the variables is stated. It’s weaknesses; The setting is not stated.
AUTHORS Strengths; The authors and their professions have been stated. Weakness; Their academic qualifications have not been highlighted. The article has not stated whether the authors have published previously on a similar topic or not.
KEYWORDS The author of the article has not highlighted the key words used in the article.
ABSTRACT Strength’s ; It highlights the purpose of the paper- To investigate the relationship between the eight known risk factors for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. It explains why the research was conducted- To investigate the effects of eight known risk factors. It is informative. Main findings of the research were highlighted. The article has stated what was accomplished during the research. The conclusions that was reached has been highlighted. Weaknesses: The researcher has not stated the significance of this research.
INTRODUCTION Strengths; It states clearly what was done in the study. From the introduction, the research problem is researchable and is enough to justify the research since it’s occurrence is high among the Taiwanese. The background of the research is relevant to the research question. Weakness: The introduction does not state the purpose and rationale for the research.
LITERATURE REVIEW The article has no literature review.
AIM The article lacks the aim of the study.
RESEARCH DESIGN Strengths; The researcher had ethical clearance from the research board of CGH and ethical standards were maintained for the subjects. Their informed consent was met. The researcher used Case control study design- The researcher used 72 subjects who were diagnosed with hyperbilirubinemia and 100 control subjects who had normal bilirubin levels. All the subjects were from the same population. Cohort studies were conducted on subjects with known risks of hyperbilirubinemia and the control group. The procedure used PCR-RFLP has been clearly outlined starting from the collection of DNA samples from umbilical cord. The apparatus used such as DNA thermal cycler has been identified and its function highlighted. It is however not described and its source is not highlighted.
Cont ’ The methods and instruments used in the study were valid and reliable PCR-RFLP is accurate in DNA studies
RESEARCH DESIGN Weaknesses The number of participants, their gender, age, characteristics have been highlighted and they are a good representative for the research. However, their selection process is not indicated. The rationale for using the procedures and apparatus mentioned in the strengths is not stated No limitations of the study discussed The researcher has used a lot of ambiguous terms in the study like danzymes , finnzymes which are unclear and can possibly be misinterpreted The researcher has not mentioned the sample size formula and the sampling technique used.
DATA ANALYSIS Strengths Data analysis was rigorous. All the data in the study was take into account The presented results are relevant to the research question and justify the study problem. The tables and the figures used in data presentation are clear and relatable Weaknesses Steps involved in data analysis were not explained clearly but strategies used were justified by the research findings.
