Introduction Group counseling refers to a therapy or form of psychotherapy that involve number of person classified together because of common characteristics, similarities, interest or interpersonal activities. It aims to help people to manage mental health condition or to cope with negative experience and behavior.

Goals of group counseling Enhance problem solving skills. Decrease social isolation. Develop communication skills. Improve emotional expresses. Gain understanding of problems and explore possible solutions.

TYPES OF GROUP COUNSELING Psychoeducation group Skill development group Cognitive behavioral group Support group Interpersonal process group

Psychoeducation group Therapy focus on educating members about their condition and providing them with new coping strategies. This group usually focus on a specific condition such as substance use disorder, anxiety and phobia.

Skill development group This therapy focus on introducing and improving the skills that members need to cope with certain mental health condition. It aim to strengthening the members behavioral and cognitive resource to help them make positive choice and avoid harmful situation.

Cognitive behavioral group This therapy attempt to re-structure the beliefs a person has that lead to a negative or harmful behavior. It aim to help members to develop management strategies that support reduced use of harmful behavior.

Support groups It help to cope with significant life changes such as loss of loved one it support group, members give and receive unconditional acceptance. Encourage it members to r eflect on their personal belief and behavior.

Interpersonal process groups It focus more on interpersonal group dynamic and less on individual psychology. Interpersonal process involve use of psychodynamic approach to promote positive changes. It view personal early life experience and subconscious belief and feelings as foundation of their personality and behavior.

Stages of group counseling There mainly four stages of group counseling Stage 1: T he initial stage of group counseling involve screening,orientation,and determining the structure of the group. Roles of group leader To establish ground rules and norms for the group. Help the members to express their fears and expectation

Cont … Assist group members in identifying concrete personal goals and sharing expectation and hope for the group. Roles group members Member attempt to create trust and become involved in establishing group norms and personal goal and learn about dynamic of group process.

Cont …. Stage 2: it is called transition stage Roles of group leader Encourage members to express their anxiety, dealing openly with conflict that occur in the group. Helping members to become autonomous and independent.

Cont … Stage 3: working stage or action stage Roles of group leader To encourage members to translate insight into action and assisting them to make the necessary changes to achieve their goals. Roles of group members Group members introduce personal issues that their willing to work on, providing and receiving feedback, applying what they learn in the group to their daily lives.

Cont …. Stage 4: Final stage or termination stage Roles of group leader To assist group members in working towards termination, providing opportunities for them to receive further counseling if necessary and help them to gain useful understanding of what they have learned.
