The living organisms in an ecosystem are grouped into three: producers, consumers and decomposers. They all play important roles in the ecosystem.
Producers Green plants are called producers because they are capable of making their own food through the process of photosynthesis. They are also called autotrops . Green plants are usually the suppliers of food of other living organisms.
Consumers Animals cannot make their own food .They depend on green plants and other animals for food. They are called consumers or heterotrophs .
Three Types of Consumers Consumers that eat plants only are called herbivores. Examples are insects, such as dragonflies that feed on plants. Cows ,goats , and rabbits are examples of herbivores . Consumers that fed on the meat of other animals are called carnivores . Examples are lions, snakes and tigers. Animals that eat both plants and animals are called omnivores . Birds ,rats , bears, monkeys and human are examples of omnivores.
Decomposers Decomposers: An organism that primarily feeds on dead organisms or the waste from living organisms Decomposers are the garbage men of the animal kingdom; they take all the dead animals and plants (consumers and decomposers) and break them down into their nutrient components so that plants can use them to make more food. Decomposers in the forest come in many different shapes and sizes. Shelf fungus is a fungus that grows on the sides of trees. It grows into the tree and decomposes it slowly. Have you ever been walking through the woods and come across a dead log that falls apart and is full of dirt? That is because decomposers have been eating and digesting that log for several years, turning it into dirt that is wonderful for plants.
Decomposers
Food Chain Food Chain: is a diagram that shows how food energy moves from one organism to another in a given environment. Food energy moves along the food chain when one organism eats another.
Food Chain
Example of Food Chain The snail eats the leaf, the smaller bird eats the snail, and larger bird eats the smaller bird.
Food Web A food web shows the many different paths plants and animals are connected. eg : A hawk might also eat a mouse, a squirrel, a frog or some other animal.
