PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF BACHELOR OF TECHNOLOGY AND LIVELIHOOD EDUCATION IN UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY OF SOUTHERN PHILIPPINES Ruby Pearl A. Maghanoy Jorie May Elevado Abegail B.Gaid Mhea A. Galera

Background and Rationale of the Study Parental involvement, defined as active participation in their children’s education, is critical for the cognitive and socio-emotional development of a child. A solid bond between parents and children fosters their goals and aspirations. Parental support encompasses various aspects, including assisting with planning for higher education, choosing colleges, financing education, and providing emotional and social encouragement. Parents are viewed as the primary influencers in their children’s lives, particularly during challenging times such as the pandemic. ( Penatil , Trinidad, Englis , & Miñoza , 2022). In the Philippines, parental involvement is seen as a key factor in improving student outcomes. Addressing both positive and negative aspects of parental engagement within the socio-economic context helps schools and communities develop strategies that enhance student achievement ( Juguilon , 2023).

Background and Rationale of the Study When parents invest time and resources in their child’s education, students tend to excel academically, with improved attendance rates and standardized test outcomes. This dedication encourages students to put more effort into their studies (Castillo et al., 2020). Chen et al. (2020) suggest that parental involvement improves children’s school attendance, resulting in better academic performance. Schools need to encourage strong partnerships with families to create a supportive learning environment for students. Coleman (2019) highlights that active parental involvement, such as attending parent-teacher conferences or helping with homework, reinforces the value of education and contributes to a conducive learning environment. It leads to better motivation, self-esteem, and academic achievement.

Background and Rationale of the Study

Background and Rationale of the Study Despite a lot of benefits, not all forms parental involvement are equally advantages in the child's academic performance.

Background and Rationale of the Study Man Wong et al. (2018) discusses "helicopter parenting," where parents are too involved in their children’s lives. That can cause low self-esteem and various emotional and behavioral issues in kids. Naparan , Genesis, and Olivar (2023) state that over-involved parents can hinder a child’s ability to make decisions, often leading to dependence on parental guidance and struggles in adapting to higher education and professional settings. Laura and Saracostti (2019) highlight that excessive parental involvement can hold back a child's growth, particularly in developing essential life skills such as strength, confidence, and critical thinking. When parents exert too much control over their children's academic and personal choices, they limit opportunities for children to resolve challenges independently.

Background and Rationale of the Study Despite the well-established link between parental support and academic performance in previous research, the researcher aims to reveal the relationship between parental involvement and the academic performance of Bachelor of Technology and Livelihood Education students at the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines. Different socio-cultural contexts influence how parental involvement is practiced and its outcomes. Some parenting styles may conflict with modern educational approaches, emphasizing the need to consider cultural factors when studying parental involvement.

Conceptual Framework Parental Involvement Academic Performance This study seek to discover the relationship of the parental involvement to the academic performance of Bachelor of Technology and Livelihood Education students of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Cagayan de Oro.

What is the level of parental involvement among Bachelor of Technology and Livelihood Education students? What is the current Graded Point Average of the Bachelor of Technology students? Is there a significant relationship between parental involvement and academic performance of Bachelor of Technology and Livelihood Education students? Statement of the problem

Hypotheses Ho1: There is no significant relationship between parental involvement and academic performance of Bachelor of technology and Livelihood Education students.

METHODOLOGY Research Design Sample of the Study Research Instrument Data Collection Procedure Data Analysis

Research Design Why Correlational research design ? It is noted that Correlational research describes an existing relationship variables. Correlational research design investigates relationships between two variables without the researcher controlling or manipulating any of them. (Devi et al., 2023). METHODOLOGY Quantitative Research M ethods Correlational Research Design

Sample of the study The respondents of the study will be the Bachelor of Technology and Livelihood Education (BTLED) students of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines - Cagayan de Oro City. USTP BTLED Simple random sampling technique will be used in this study. According to Bhardwaj, (2019) Simple random sampling is selected for populations which are highly homogenous where the members of the research are randomly selected to participate in the research.

Research Instrument The researcher will utilize an adopted questionnaire to measure Parental involvement from the study of Areli Dohner -Chavez (2011). The questionnaire will be categorized into three parts; demographic profile of the students, the level of involvement, and the level of academic performance of the respondents.

Research Instrument In the level of parental involvement the questionnaire will have a 5-point Likert.

Research Instrument For the level of academic performance of the respondents, it will be evaluated through the student`s average grades for that last school year 2023-2024.

Data Collection Procedure The researchers of this study will secure a permission from the Dean of College of Science and Technology Education, with written consent for formality purposes The researcher will clarify the purpose and benefits of the study to the Dean and target research respondents. The consent aimed to inform the participants about the study context purpose and advantage. Finally, to collect the data, the researcher will give physically the survey questionnaires.

Data Analysis To determine the level of Parental Involvement of students MEAN To determine the level of Academic Performance of students FREQUENCY AND PERCENTAGE To determine the significant relationship of the two variables PEARSON PRODUCT- MOMENT OF CORRELATION
