Introduction A cactus is a member of the plant family Cactaceae,a family comprising about 127 genera with some 1750 known species of the order caryophyllaes . The word cactus derives , through latin , from the ancient Greek “ kaktos” , a name orginally used by Theophrastus for a spiny plant whose identity is not certain Cacti occur in a wide range of size and shape . Although some species live in quite humid environments , even though found in Atacama desert . Cacti show many adaptations to conserve water . Almost all cacti are succulents . Characteristics Of Cacti Cacti are succulent perennial plants Cacti generally have thick herbaceous or woody chlorophyll –containing stems Cacti can be distinguished from other succulent plants by the presence of areoles' .
The root system generally thin , fibrous , and shallow , ranging widely to absorb superficial moisture Uses Of Cacti Decorating - as houseplants, in dry gardens , or even as a fence Edible fruit producing – such as prickly pear, hylocereus , Dragon fruit Psychoactive uses – the peyote , is a well known psychoactive agent used by native Americans in southwestern United States . Host for bugs – the Opuntia is also used as a host for cochineal bugs for the Cochineal dye industry .
Propagation Of Cacti Cacti can be propagated in many ways. Mainly propagation is done by cuttings, bulbils and offsets, seed, grafting, and division. Cuttings, division, and bulbils and offsets are the easiest, where as seeding and grafting are the hardest. However the type of propagation is dependant on the species of the cactus. For example Ice plants and Christmas cacti are best propagated by stem cuttings. Each method has many different ways to carry out the propagation . One of the easiest ways to propagate cacti is by cuttings. Cuttings are pieces of cactus stem without roots. This method provides larger plants much more quickly, but fewer plants can be obtained. The most common way is stem cuttings
Some cacti can be propagated by bulbils and offsets . Some agaves and aloes form bulbils on their flowering stalks. These can be removed and rooted during warm weather. Offsets can be easily pulled or cut off the main plant. The main plant often benefits form removal of offsets, offsets divert energy form the main stem. Propagating by seed is an inexpensive but slow way to introduce unusual and exotic cacti. Seeds may be collected from any cactus plant that has flowered by simply removing the ripe pods or the fastest way is to purchase them from a Nursery, . Fully mature pods are cut open and the seeds are squashed out onto a piece of paper towel to dry. Most cacti can be raised from seed.
Compost Cactus compost is a special soil mix especially for cacti to grow in . These spiky plants are used to living in the desert, where the soil is dry and harsh. Cactus compost tries to imitate the desert soil, so your cacti can grow under the best living conditions. It usually consists of sand or grit, soil and peat moss.re used to living in the desert, where the soil is dry consists of sand.
When re-potting cacti and succulents choose specific compost, such as Westland Cacti & Succulent Potting Mix , which contains added horticultural sand and grit for excellent drainage and organic matter as a source of vital plant nutrients. Mix together three parts potting soil, three parts coarse sand or gravel, and two parts perlite or pumice . CACTUS CONTAINER : Choosing the pot or container for cactus is very important and can affect your plant’s health. Container material, shape and size all have a big effect on cacti and how they will grow. While some containers are best or acceptable, some are totally unsuitable.
Organic and Inorganic Materials Inorganic materials for cactus mixes are necessary to make them porous, drain well and promote aeration in the soil. The most common inorganic bases for cactus mixes are pumice and perlite . These two are often considered interchangeable, but they do differ in characteristics. Pumice is longer lasting and more superior. Perlite is more widely available and less expensive. Other materials such as grit and gravel are also used to limit the amount of water the potting medium can hold. Cactus mixes benefit from organic matter to increase the volume of water a mixture can hold and its ability to absorb nutrients. Common organic materials added to succulent mixes are peat, coir and mulch.
Flowering Of Cacti Place the cactus in a bright position where they can get plenty of sunshine . Most cacti need at least five hours of bright light so use artificial light if it's too dark indoors. Succulent plants which don't get enough light will etiolate (become pale) and most likely not. Cactus flowers are like any others, consisting of the following: petals sepals stigmas stamens Anthers.
Cactus Planting Timeframe Outside Ground Grown Cacti Cactus plants generally used to grow in hot and dry climates. The best time to plant cactus in outside ground is during late spring through summer (mid May - to June / early July). Transplanting Cacti The best time for transplanting cacti is spring and summer so that plant gets enough time to reestablish in a new location before winter. Seed Grown Cacti Cacti seeds are best sown in late Winter, Spring or early Summer. The reason is the days are longer and temperature is warmer. Then seeds can also be sown in autumn and winter with proper light and additional heating keeping adequate seedling temperature ( 70 Fahrenheit /21 Celsius).
Methods Of Planting Of Cacti Cactus plant in outdoors 1 . Most cactus plants need lightweight, well-draining soil. Prepare the soil in the planting area by mixing equal parts native soil . 2. Dig a hole that’s equally as deep and 1½ times as wide as the root ball or stem (some transplanted cacti don’t come with large root balls). 3. Set the plant in the hole so the north side of the plant faces north. This side is often marked with a flag or chalk; if it isn’t, be sure to ask before you leave the garden center. 4. Fill in around the root ball with additional soil mixture, then pat it gently. 5. Water lightly.
Cactus Plant Indoors Select a pot that is 1½ times as wide as the cactus root ball or stem. If your home is humid or you tend to water too much. We may want to choose an unglazed container, which will dry out more quickly. Fill the pot ⅓ full with fast-draining , which contains just the right nutrients to get your cactus off to a great start. Place cactus in the pot so that the stem or root ball is at the same depth as it was before transplanting , Wear gloves or use a thick layer of newspaper to protect your hands! Fill in around the root ball, leaving about an inch between the top of the soil and the rim of the container. Water lightly, until the soil is about as damp as a wrung-out sponge.
Potting Of Cactus Add gravel to your potting mix: Carefully spread a layer of gravel or small pebbles in the bottom of your pot. Remove the cactus from the nursery pot Test the plant size : Make sure the plant isn’t too far down in the container nor too high above the top of the pot. Position the plant where ones want to be in the pot : Hold the plant gently where ones would like it to stay and fill all the spaces between the cactus and the container with a potting mix. Firm the soil : Once plant is in a good position, use a spoon, small trowel, or any other tool to add more potting mix while gently firming it down. First watering : Lightly water to the cactus for a few minutes. wait for a few days until the soil dries out completely before given the water again.
Repotting Of Cacti Repot a cactus, need tea towels/sheets of newspaper, a blunt knife, slightly larger pot, free-draining potting mix, watering can, horticultural grit, and a fork. Following these steps to repot a plant: Loosen up the potting mix by carefully running a blunt knife or any other suitable tool in it. Carefully remove a cactus from the old pot. Be cautious to avoid coming into contact with the spines. Hard gloves or combined sheets of newspaper will help to avoid contact with the pricks. A pair of tongs can also work fine. Remove soil from the roots and make sure to have individual roots separated from each other. Thoroughly check the roots for any signs of diseases or pests and treat with appropriate chemicals if need be Prune large roots Allow the cactus to dry out for up to four days to allow roots that might have been hurt enough time to heal to eliminate the risk of root rot.
Follow the potting procedure described above to plant the cactus in the new pot. However, don’t water to the plant immediately. Give it up to a week after repotting before watering to it. Potting and repotting are crucial parts of growing cactus at home since ensuring to maintain the ideal pot size at all times. If ones follow the steps outlined in this guide, ones can pot/repot a plant without a problem.
Important Of Cacti Cacti plays an important role in the desert ecology and are a vital source of food and water for many desert animals. . Some cactus species have been utilized by humans since prehistoric times, for various purposes including food and medicinal use. They are also popular as garden and house plants Prickly pear cactus is also used for type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, alcohol hangover, colitis, diarrhea, and benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). It is also used to fight viral infections. Cactus water used for skin care, and many beauty and cosmetic products. The drink is naturally low in calories and sugar and rich in health-boosting nutrients and antioxidants In foods, the prickly pear juice is used in jellies and candies.
