Halal Status Of Carbonated Drinks
WHAT IS HALAL STATUS Halal is an Arabic word that means“permissible.” I n t e r m s o f f ood, i t m e a ns f ood t h a t i s p e r m i ss ib l e acc o r ding to Islamic law For a meat to be certified “ halal ,” it cannot be a forbidden cut (such as meat from hindquarters) or animal (such as pork) The animal must be hung upside down and allowed to bleed dry .
CARBONATED DRINKS A s o f t d r i n k i s a d r i n k t h a t u s u a l l y c o n t a ins ca r b o n a t e d w a t e r ( a l t h o ugh some lemonades not carbonated), a sweetener, and a natural or artificial flavoring. The sweetener may be a sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, fruit juice, a sugar substitute Soft drinks may also contain caffeine, colorings, preservatives, and/or other ingredients. Soft drinks are called "soft" in contrast with "hard" alcoholic drinks. Small amounts of alcohol may be present in a soft drink, but the alcohol conten must be less than 0.5% of the total volume of the drink in many countries and localities , if the drink is to be considered non-alcohol Fruitit punch, tea and other such non-alcoholic drinks are technically soft drinks by this definition, but are not generally referred to as such. HALAL LABELLED SOFT DRINKS Coca-Cola Malaysia recently refuted allegations that its imported Coca-Cola UEFA Euro 2016 limited edition aluminium bottles, sold in selected outlets in the country, contain alcohol company issued a statement that although the limited edition bottles were not produced in Malaysia but imported from Europe Our research findings demonstrate that halal-labelled soft drinks are available across all categories, with juice and RTD tea contributing the most in sales. Major international brands carry halal labels including Ribena (Suntory), Pokka (Sapporo), Sunkist (Sunkist Growers) and a range of Coca-Cola’s products

HALAL AND HARAM ACCORDING TO HADITH Principally, if the alcohol is extracted from grapes or dates it is not permissible. Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, ‘Khamr (wine) is from these two trees, dates and grapes.’ (Mishkãt p. 317). Furthermore, Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, ‘Alcohol itself is prohibited and intoxication in every other beverage.’ (Hidaaya vol. 4 p. 497).
