Half Brick Walling Basic Calculations Stonemasonry Department 2012

How Many Courses? Using the brickwork dimension table provided by your course tutor, you can identify how many courses of brick are required to build a brick wall of a specific height.   450mm 375mm 300mm 225mm 150mm 75mm 525mm 600mm 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Activity 1 Without using the brickwork dimension table complete the table below   No.of Courses Height (mm) 75 3 300 6 7 675 12

How Many Bricks Long? Similarly you can quickly identify how many bricks are required to build a wall of a specific length.   890mm 665mm 440mm 215mm 1115mm 1340mm 1 2 3 4 5 6

Activity 2 Without using the brickwork dimension table complete the table below   No.of Bricks Length(mm) 1 3 900 6 7 2025 12

A Square Metre of Brickwork In every square metre of half brick walling there are 60 bricks . We can calculate this by working out the surface area of one brick (including mortar) and seeing how many times it fits into an area 1m long and 1m high.   1m 1m

How Many Bricks? Before a bricklayer starts a project they will calculate the number of bricks required to complete the project. They can then order the bricks knowing they will have enough materials (but not too much). To calculate the number of bricks required for a half brick wall you multiply the surface area by 60 as there are 60 bricks per square metre.

Activity 3 Number of Bricks = Surface Area x 60 Number of Bricks = (10 x 3) x 60 Number of Bricks = 1800   The wall shown is 10m long and 3m high. How many bricks are required to build the wall?   3m 10m

Activity 4 Number of Bricks = Surface Area x 60 Number of Bricks = (8 x 2.6) x 60 Number of Bricks = 1248   The wall shown is 8m long and 2.6m high. How many bricks are required to build the wall?   2.6m 8m

Activity 5 Number of Bricks = Surface Area x 60 Number of Bricks = (6 x 1.5) x 60 Number of Bricks = 540   The wall shown is 6m long and 1.5m high. How many bricks are required to build the wall?   1.5m 6m
