Halothane
Introduction Halogenated ethane 2-bromo-2-chloro-l: 1:1-trifluoroethane. This drug, which was discovered in 1951
Halothane, 2-bromo-2-chloro-l: 1:1-trifluoroeth- ane Molecular weight 198 Boiling point (°C) 50.2 Specific gravity (g/ml at 20 °C) 1.86 Vapour pressure Tmm Hg at 20°C) 241.5 Blood/gas solubility coefficient 2.4 Oil/water partition coefficient 330
most important physical property of an agent is its blood/gas partition coefficient. This is the ratio between its concentration in the blood and its concentration in the ambient gaseous phase, when the two are in equilibrium duration of induction of anaesthesia with fixed comparable concentrations of agents depends on the blood/gas coefficient. Thus, for example, induction would be expected to be slow with ether and methoxyflurane which are highly soluble in blood, while halothane is a less soluble agent, blood/gas partition coefficient 2.4, and at a comparable concentration induction of anaesthesia would be more rapid.
