Sarvepalli
Radhakrishnan, the
great philosopher and
the second President of
India and the first vice
–president of India .
His birthday is
obsrevedas Teacher’s
day all over India . He
was born on 5
september1888 at
Tirruttaniin
Tamilnadu .
His Father was
SarvepalliVeeraswami
and his Mother was
Sitamma .
He served as professor
of philosophy at
Mysore (1918–21)
andCalcutta(1921–31;
1937–41) universities
and as vice chancellor
of Andhra University
(1931–36).
He was professor of
Eastern religions
andethicsat
theUniversity of
Oxfordin England
(1936–52) and vice
chancellor of Benares
Hindu University
(1939–48) in India.
Radhakrishnanled the
Indian delegation to
theUnitedNationsEdu
cational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization
(UNESCO; 1946–52)
and was elected
chairman of
UNESCO’s executive
board (1948–49).
From 1953 to 1962 he
was chancellor of
theUniversity of
Delhi.
From 1949 to 1952 he
served as Indian
ambassador to
theSoviet Union.

On his return to India
in 1952 he was elected
vice president, and on

elected president,

Prasad, who was the
first president of
independent India.
Radhakrishnanwas
married to Sivakamu,a
distant cousin, at the
age of 14. The couple
had five
daughters.Theyalso
had a son .

1947 following India's independence.
