Gendered spaces are physical or symbolic environments shaped by gender norms and power dynamics. They often reinforce traditional roles by associating public spaces with masculinity and private ones with femininity (Spain, 1992). This division influences how individuals navigate identity, access, and power, making it a key concept for understanding the everyday operation of gender in society. Introduction 3

4 Mapping Gendered Spaces and Women’s Mobility

Figure- Gendered Division of Public Spaces. 6

Domestic interiors reflect and shape societal gender roles, both physically and symbolically, evolving over time. Societal gender roles 7

Spatial Segregation:Homes had gender-specific areas, like separate living spaces for men and women in Masculine spaces (libraries, studies) contrasted with feminine spaces (parlours). Interior Design: Gendered aesthetics were evident, with lighter colours in feminine rooms and darker tones in masculine ones. Room Evolution: The kitchen’s shift from a service space to a more visible area reflected changing roles, particularly for women. Contemporary Trends: Modern homes may include gender-specific spaces like “his and hers” bathrooms, walk-in closets. Physical Environments: 8

Gender Roles and Hierarchy: The division of space mirrored societal gender hierarchies, often reinforcing male dominance, as seen where men were associated with public, prestigious areas and women with private, domestic ones. Privacy and Status: Gendered spaces now symbolise luxury, privacy, and status. Modern “his and hers” spaces, for example, emphasize individuality and personal seclusion. Cultural Influence: Domestic layouts are influenced by cultural attitudes towards gender, with the division of space reflecting broader societal norms. Gender Identity: Gendered domestic spaces are tied to individual identities, with design both influencing and being influenced by occupants’ gender roles. Symbolic Environments: 9

Public Behavior Domestic Roles Biased Infrastructure: Public design favours men (e.g., 63% of public toilets for men, fewer female security lines) Scrutiny of Women Ineffective Solutions Critiques how societal norms and urban design in India restrict women’s freedom in public spaces. 10

“I ASKED MY 3 YEAR OLD NIECE IF SHE WOULD ALSO GO TO OFFICE LIKE ME WHEN SHE GROWS OLD. SHE SAID: "I AM A GIRL. ONLY BOYS GO TO OFFICE. PAPA IS A BOY, SO HE GOES TO OFFICE. MUMMA IS A GIRL AND SHE STAYS AT HOME, SO EVEN I WILL STAY AT HOME." I “ I WAS TELLING SOMEONE ABOUT HOW I PLAY THE ELECTRIC GUITAR. HE RESPONDED: "LEAVE THAT TO THE GUYS, YOU HAVE TO ULTIMATELY SIT AT HOME AND MAKE CHAPATIS." 11

Gendered spaces are deeply influenced by social characteristics and changing societal views of male and female roles. Domestic interiors have undergone a cyclical evolution from degendered to segregated, then democratic, and now a partial return to segregation. Spatial constraint has often been a defining factor in promoting more democratic and shared spaces. Conclusion 12

Ki &Ka: (2016) This film flips the script on conventional gender roles by showing a man who aspires to be a homemaker and a wife who is a career-driven professional, discussing the societal expectations and limitations placed on both genders. Gendered Spaces in Movie 13

Hellaro explores gendered spaces by contrasting the oppressive, male-controlled village with the liberating openness of the desert, where garba becomes a powerful act of female resistance and self-expression. 14
