Introduction The revolution in ozone-based caries treatment moves forward: healOzone paved the way for highly effective, pain-free caries and root canal treatment with ozone, and the success story continues.

History It was not until 1932 that ozone was seriously studied by the scientific community, when ozonized water was used as a disinfectant by Dr. E.A. Fisch, a Swiss dentist. Joachim Hänsler, a German physicist, joined another physician, Hans Wolff, to develop the first ozone generator for medical use.

chemistry Ozone is a triatomic molecule, Its molecular weight is 48 Thermodynamically highly instable compound. Medical grade Ozone is a mixture of pure O2 and pure O3 in the ratio of 0.1% to 5% of O3 and 95%-99.5% of O2 Ozone gas has a high oxidation potential and is 1.5 times greater than chloride when used as an antimicrobial agent against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa.

Understanding heal ozone 1. Oxygen supply  2. Air supply  3. Air dryer  4. Differential pressure sensor   5. Ozone generator 6. Tooth cup 7. Ozone 8. Hand piece 9. Tubing  10. Moisture trap  11. Ozone neutralizer   12. Vacuum pump

Biological action: Ozone Anti –microbial action Anti –inflammatory & analgesic action Immune-stimulating action Anti-hypoxic action Bioenergetics and biosynthetic action

Goals: ozone Elimination of pathogens. Restoration of proper oxygen metabolism. Induction of a friendly ecologic environment. Increased circulation. Immune activation. Simulation of the humoral anti-oxidant system .

indications

contraindications Pregnancy – to avoid mutagenic risk. Hyperthyroidism Severe anemia Thrombocytopenia Cardiovascular instability Patients on ACE inhibitors

Pros and cons ADVANTAGES Advantages for the dentist: • Better treatment results • Increased treatment safety • Time savings • Relaxed treatment • Marketing instrument

Advantages for the patient: No stress and anxiety Increased treatment safety Shorter treatment times Painless and gentle caries treatment Maximum preservation of healthy tooth structure No anesthesia, no drilling, no pain No complications No fillings needed in many cases Maximum preservation of healthy tooth structure Ozone-treated teeth are more resistant to caries .

disadvantages OZONE TOXICITY TECHNIQUE SENSITIVE EXPENSIVE

Ozone detoxification Patient must be placed in supine position Inhale humid oxygen Ascorbic acid Vitamin E Acetylcysteine

conclusion Ozone therapy with Heal Ozone following mechanical root canal preparation consistently resulted in reduction of the unpleasant symptoms of pulpitis in our patients treated so far. healOzone successfully improved even difficult cases with fistulae and persistent symptoms within a short period of time.  Heal Ozone produces very promising results in endodontic applications, caries treatment and seems to allow the dentist to make a reliable prognosis, even in difficult cases.
