Prevalence Of Neck Pain In Undergraduate Physiotherapy Students
INTRODUCTION Pain is defined as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage ;or in terms of such damage 1 . Pain is thus more than merely the firing of nociceptive neurons, but also includes the perception of pain ,the experience of suffering and pain behaviour . The perception of pain may depend on the situation or mental state ,such as when soldiers on battlefield or athletes on the playing field do not feel pain when injured In contrast ,a person with post traumatic stress disorder(PTSD)may experience significant pain without any physical stimulus.
In 2017,The Orthop aedic section of the American Physical Therapy(APTA) revised the previous clinical practice guidelines of neck pain from 2008 and produced a new summary of recommendations and guidelines from current peer-reviewed literature 2 . Neck pain lacks a common clinical definition .The most common type is non –specific neck pain is defined as “pain with a postural or mechanical basis often called cervical spondylosis.” 3 The 7 most common types of neck pain are : muscle spasm ,muscle pain ,headache ,facet joint pain, with their own causation ,diagnosis and treatment. 4
Neck pain is becoming increasingly common throughout the world. 5 With around two-thirds of people experiencing neck pain at one moment in their life .Women are more prone to develop neck pain than men and risk increases with age. 6 Level of education can also affect and cause neck pain as student spend more time in studies. 7 Neck Disability Index (NDI) 8 ,which is a modification of the Owestry low back pain index. This index and similar tests ( eg Bournemouth Questionnaire, The Copenhagen Neck Functional Disability Scale.
Need of Study Neck problem are very common in physiotherapy student which alters the biomechanics and movement which leads to weakness of neck muscles . Neck pain is a critical medical issue among undergraduate because of poor posture style sitting for delayed periods with forward head posture ,utilizing personal computer , mobile phone in forward neck flexion causes strain in muscles and increments compressive power in cervical spine results in neck pain . In numerous cases ,neck pain is an outcome of bad posture or defective ergonomics at work area I am doing this study to make aware the students about the faulty posture can cause neck pain
Review Of Literature Shivum Sachdev, et al conducted a study to assess the prevalence of neck pain among undergraduate physiotherapy students of University of Balochistan ,Quetta :A cross sectional study . From this study it is concluded that the prevalence of neck pain among physical therapy students of university of Balochistan was high and measured about 69%.
2.Siriluck Kanchanomai et al. conducted a study to assess risk factors for the onset of neck pain in undergraduate students .A prospective cohort study. From this study it is concluded that the study found very few risk factors that predicted onset of neck pain.
