Health Needs Assessment (HNA) Health needs assessment is a systematic method for identifying the health issues facing a population. It is the systematic approach to ensure that the health service uses its resources to improve the health of the population in the most efficient way. Health needs are those that can benefit to health from health care . 2
Applications 3 It helps to what needs to be accomplished to reach your project goals. It helps to identify medical needs of patients. It helps to identify , understand and prioritize the needs that districts and schools must address to improve performance.
Different types of needs Felt needs: - The health need that the community people immediately identify . Needs which are seen by the community people. II. Observed needs: Those health needs which can be scientifically shown to be needs in order to solve a community health. These needs are seen by the health exports outside . 4
5 III. Real needs : Those needs that result from a jointly developed understanding of priority needs of the local people and priority needs as defined by those representing the government services sectors. It is the root cause of the health.

Profile your population : in terms of age, gender, environmental factors, and life style Measure the extent of the problem : by gathering some data of incidence and prevalence Calculate the expected number of cases : prevalence X population/1000 Collect service utilization data : number or percentage of people accessing the service Calculate unmet needs : expected number of cases( step 3) – current number of people who are using the service (step4) 9

Review current evidence : effectiveness of health education, counselling, exercise, healthy life style. 8 . Measure your population perception and expectation : through interviews, questionnaire, focus group, health panel. 9 . Seek opinion : engage professionals and those people working in the field. 10 . Principles of health needs assessment Health needs assessment should fit in with the appropriate decision making and planning systems. It is not an end in itself but means to help plan the future. Community people demand and feel health need to improve health status. 11
It is a part of cyclic process and should include an evaluation of how the needs have been met and not met by the health action taken. Real need should be fulfilled by community member , leader and government health service provider. 12
