About This Presentation

The machine consists of a pump, which functions as the heart, and an oxygenator, which replaces the function of the lungs. During a heart-lung bypass, oxygen-poor blood is first diverted from the upper chambers of the heart and is directed to a reservoir in the heart-lung machine.

Introduction 01

A heart-lung machine is an equipment that temporarily takes over the work of the heart and/or lungs, providing blood and oxygen to the body. Also called a cardiopulmonary bypass circuit (CPB) or a heart-lung bypass machine, it is most often used during serious procedures that require the heart to be stopped. What is a heart-lung machine?

Patients are kept on a heart-lung machine for only as long as it takes to stop the heart from beating, complete open-heart surgery or a procedure on the lungs, and restart the heart. A heart-lung machine may also be used on a person who needs heart or respiratory support for non-surgical reasons. What is a heart-lung machine?

CARDIO-PULMONARY BYPASS CIRCUIT Venous Cannulae Venous reservoir Pump Oxygenator Heat exchanger Filter Arterial cannulae Basic components of CPB circuit

1. Venous Cannulae : They drain the blood from the patient into the CPB circuit. One or more cannulas may be used based on the type of procedure or preference of surgeon. Basic components of CPB

2. Venous Reservoir: This stores the blood which is received from cannulae . Two types: Collapsable and Rigid compartment Basic components of CPB

3. Pump: It is the device which is used to generate or produce the pressure required to return the blood to the patient. Types: Roller pump, Centrifugal pump Basic components of CPB

4. Heat Exchanger: It monitors and regulates the temperature of the blood to provide moderate systemic hypothermia. Water circulates within the heat exchanger in a counter current way to maintain the temperatures. Basic components of CPB

5. Oxygenator: It is the device which helps in the O2 and CO2 exchange. Types: Bubble and Membrane oxygenators. Basic components of CPB

6. Filters: These are designed to trap particulate matter and gas emboli. Filters are used in suction line, arterial line and venous line. Basic components of CPB

7. Arterial cannulae : These cannulae return the blood from the CPB circuit to the patient. Ascending aorta is the most common site for the arterial cannulation. Basic components of CPB
