streatham action Transport Group Update
Passenger Benefi t Fund: £80k for streatham
station and £30k for each of streatham Common
and streatham hill stations. network rail told
us there is no need to pool the money and
put it towards the long-awaited accessibility
improvements at streatham station, and it would
not accelerate things in any way. The most popular
request for use of the funds is for one further
ticket barrier + mobile phone ticket readers at
each of the 3 stations, a clean-up and repaint
at each station, and improved lighting under the
bridge at streatham station. network rail hope to
have the accessibility project delivered by end of
september 2021, but with no guarantee provided
at this stage. We need that guarantee, so we shall
continue to lobby hard until we receive it!
Streatham Passenger Group: Thank you to
the many who expressed an interest in joining the
passenger Group. We have approached a cross-
section of those respondents to draw up a fi nal
group of 9 whom we hope will effectively represent
the views of regular users of each of our 3 stations.
The group will also include 2 representatives from
saT and one from each of network rail, Govia
Thameslink, and Lambeth Council, alongside one
for the central streatham ward councillors. We aim
to have our fi rst quarterly meeting in October.
Proposed cPZ for St Leonard’s
and Streatham vale West area
LBL conducted an online survey,
which closed at the end of
september, among residents and
businesses in these areas. “Streatham Vale
West Area” comprises roads in Streatham South
ward close to streatham Common station and
consequently subject to acute parking stress.
The decision on whether to proceed to the next
stage will be based upon the response, and if
proceeding, will relate to the preferred days and
times of operation. The 3 choices on hours are:
10am – 12 noon, 10am – 4pm, 10am – 5.30pm,
with parking in marked parking bays only during
the CpZ hours of operation charged at rate
(currently) of £3.60 per hour. If the decision is
taken to proceed with next steps then a “statutory
consultation” will likely then take place by spring
2020. I shall report back further in future editions.

Streatham Gourmet
We’d heard that the Earl Ferrers has recently
overhauled its menu and is rather good so,
following a lazy Sunday morning, I dragged
a fellow foodie out to prove the pudding. We
were a little surprised that the place was not
heaving, being lunchtime and all, and we had
a choice of tables. The pub is a popular local,
and one of Streatham’s hidden gems, tucked
away behind Tesco’s on the corner of Ellora
Rd. It’s a favourite drinking haunt with its great
selection of bar games and outdoor tables, but
this was a first for dining.
The Earl Ferrers’ menu is a straightforward
affair with some 4 or 5 starters and mains to
choose from and 3 desserts, accompanied by
a carefully chosen wine list. My companion
voted for calamari to start and roast leg of
lamb. I, mussels in white wine sauce and slow
roast belly pork. To accompany our repast, we
plumped for a refreshing and fruity unfiltered
Italian red, Nero D’A vola (highly recommended).
Service was swift. the staff friendly, and the
food looked really tasty. The calamari were
tender and fried in a light crispy batter, and the
mussels still had vestiges of seaside brine in
their delicate sauce. Our mains arrived in short
order and resembled small mountains! The
Rock of Gibraltar sat on my plate; a vast slab of
perfectly crispy-cracklinged, melt-on-the-tongue
pork sat atop enormous roast spuds, carrots,
parsnips and asparagus, all swimming in a rich
gravy.
The lamb dish differed only in that a Yorkshire
pudding perched on the summit of slices of
leg. Utterly delicious. Our only (tiny) complaints
were that the potatoes, while crispy on the
outside, lacked that perfect fluffy texture and
that our main courses did not arrive together
but were served a few minutes apart.

Apart from that, Sunday lunch at the Earl
Ferrers is fabulous and we will be back!
Regrettably, we couldn’t find room for pudding
– we didn’t quite roll out, but it was a close-run
thing! A two-course meal for two and a bottle of
wine cost £70.
The Earl Ferrers has a great programme of
events and a friendly local vibe– last month
they hosted an epic street party, and there’s
regular live music. This month they are the
final stop on the Streatham Festival’s free all-
day live gig trail, the S TREATHAM S TRUT on 12
October, hosting The Mayans at 10pm.

The Jewel in streatham’s Crown.

In september 1928 musical comedy star,

The fi rst production was Cole Porter’s revue

Famous performers included ballerina anna

police offi cers had to escort the party to
their car. The D’oyly Carte and Covent
Garden opera Companies were frequent
visitors and november 1932 saw a week
of sir henry Wood conducting his own
symphony orchestra.
In June 1944, the theatre was hit by one of
the V1 rockets which fell on the local area.
It reopened at the end of 1950 with the
pantomime Cinderella, with a young Clive Dunn
as one of the Broker’s men. The rich and
famous continued to visit after the reopening;
Winston Churchill attended a performance of
The Yeoman of The Guard by the D’oyly Carte
in 1952. In 1956, arnold Wesker came to see
John osborne’s Look Back in anger, which
inspired him to write his roots trilogy.
In the later ‘50s popular comedy stars
such as Kenneth Williams, Barbara
Windsor, Sid James and June Whitfi eld
appeared regularly. But some hard-hitting
‘modern’ dramas were also performed,
including peter shaffer’s Five Finger
exercise, and robert anderson’s Tea
and sympathy. In one of the last shows
performed at the theatre, Tom Courtenay
made his fi rst major London appearance
in Keith Waterhouse’s Billy Liar.
The theatre closed in 1962 and reopened
as a bingo hall. since the beginning of 2017,
streatham hill Theatre has become a 24-hour
slot machine venue. no theatre has been
performed there since, but the Friends of
streatham hill Theatre group has formed and
are dedicated to the attempt to revive it as an
arts venue.

1 | bity booker @
Streatham Wine House 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Folk singer and songwriter who mostly writes for voice
and classical guitar with a few whimsical touches
like bells, musical saws, and birdsong. The eff ect
is mystical, mainly due to Bity’s precise, hypnotic
fi ngerpicking style and elastic voice. Bity’s melodic
music has strains of ‘60s psychedelic magic and
original storytelling.
2 | richard O'Gorman @
Perfect Blend 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Six foot fi ve Irishman Richard O’ Gorman was
christened ‘too tawl’ whilst in Nashville, Tennessee,

extensively (London, Berlin, Edinburgh, San Francisco
& Los Angeles).
3 | Vince burke @
El Chicos 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Back from playing another solo set at Latitude,
Vince has added Paul on double-bass and Jawad on

5 | Gene Pool and The shallows @
The Leigham Well 5pm-6pm
“Gene Pool and The Shallows” are Rory Replicant, Tom
U Tation, and twins, Charlie and Clarry Chromosome.
Lead singer, Gene Pool, never existed! The band play
guitar instrumentals based in the 60s surf scene. The
lack of vocals makes this genre truly international in
nature; expect high energy, reverb-drenched tunes
and plenty to dance to. Surfs up!
6 | The Family reunion @
The White Lion 6pm-7pm
Funk & Soul. The Family Reunion are a South London
collective writing and producing their own music, as
well as performing much loved Funk & Soul Classics.
Their recent single “You’re Rich” featuring Sheila
Prospere has received airplay on Tony Blackburn’s Soul
on Sunday show and Mi-Soul Radio.
7 | sherika sherard @
Art & Craft 7pm-8pm
Independent Singer/Songwriter from South London,
fusing Lyrical Soul and Folk. Has opened for Legendary
Musician, Seal, and recently featured on Spike Lee’s
Netfl ix series She’s Gotta Have it. With a voice like
velvet to deliver her robust persona this Artist never
fails to warm the hearts of listeners.
8 | Joss cope @
The Mere Scribbler 8pm-9pm
Singer/Songwriter Midlands born musician with a
pedigree stretching back to the Liverpool post-punk
scene. He’s worked with his elder brother Julian, made
videos, campaigned for Greenpeace, and played guitar
and recently released his debut solo LP Unrequited
Lullabies (Gare Du Nord) a rich tapestry of psychedelic
pop song masterpieces.
9 | blodyn bach @
The Railway 9pm-10pm
A three-piece blues-rock band based in South London.
Check them out if you like the sound of traditionally
hand-built cigar-box guitars and your blues
preference is on the muddy side. Formed at the end of
the summer in 2014, they are currently juggling their
time between gigs and the studio, where they are
working on original material.
10 | The Mayans @
The Earl Ferrers 10:00 pm - 11:00 pm
A Soul/jazz and funky roots instrumental unit playing
infectious tight melodic grooves tinged with an earthy
vibe and bubbling solos. The Mayans dig deep into
funky and fusion, inspired by the likes of Mittoo, Grey
Boy All Stars, & Eddie Harris, as well as arrangements
of old school party classics and original material.

Six foot fi ve Irishman Richard O’ Gorman was
christened ‘too tawl’ whilst in Nashville, Tennessee,
playing his brand of bustling indie/folk in such famous

received widespread national radio airplay, and toured
extensively (London, Berlin, Edinburgh, San Francisco
& Los Angeles).
3 | Vince burke @
El Chicos 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Back from playing another solo set at Latitude,
Vince has added Paul on double-bass and Jawad on
percussion. Recent triumphs include airplay on Radio
3’s Late Junction, and BBC6 Music, and his debut
Album ‘Over here in the Trees. “The Wonderful Vincent
Burke…it jumps out of the speakers for sheer quality
and sincerity’’ Tom Robinson BBC 6Music.
4 | Whiskey Kittens @
Chalkpit 4pm-5pm
Whiskey Kittens play covers with a twist. This rock/

5 | Gene Pool and The shallows @
The Leigham Well 5pm-6pm
“Gene Pool and The Shallows” are Rory Replicant, Tom
U Tation, and twins, Charlie and Clarry Chromosome.
Lead singer, Gene Pool, never existed! The band play
guitar instrumentals based in the 60s surf scene. The
lack of vocals makes this genre truly international in
nature; expect high energy, reverb-drenched tunes
and plenty to dance to. Surfs up!
6 | The Family reunion @
The White Lion 6pm-7pm
Funk & Soul. The Family Reunion are a South London
collective writing and producing their own music, as
well as performing much loved Funk & Soul Classics.
Their recent single “You’re Rich” featuring Sheila
Prospere has received airplay on Tony Blackburn’s Soul
on Sunday show and Mi-Soul Radio.
7 | sherika sherard @
Art & Craft 7pm-8pm
Independent Singer/Songwriter from South London,
fusing Lyrical Soul and Folk. Has opened for Legendary
Musician, Seal, and recently featured on Spike Lee’s
Netfl ix series She’s Gotta Have it. With a voice like
velvet to deliver her robust persona this Artist never
fails to warm the hearts of listeners.
8 | Joss cope @
The Mere Scribbler 8pm-9pm
Singer/Songwriter Midlands born musician with a
pedigree stretching back to the Liverpool post-punk
scene. He’s worked with his elder brother Julian, made
videos, campaigned for Greenpeace, and played guitar
and recently released his debut solo LP Unrequited
Lullabies (Gare Du Nord) a rich tapestry of psychedelic
pop song masterpieces.
9 | blodyn bach @
The Railway 9pm-10pm
A three-piece blues-rock band based in South London.
Check them out if you like the sound of traditionally
hand-built cigar-box guitars and your blues
preference is on the muddy side. Formed at the end of
the summer in 2014, they are currently juggling their
time between gigs and the studio, where they are
working on original material.
10 | The Mayans @
The Earl Ferrers 10:00 pm - 11:00 pm
A Soul/jazz and funky roots instrumental unit playing
infectious tight melodic grooves tinged with an earthy
vibe and bubbling solos. The Mayans dig deep into
funky and fusion, inspired by the likes of Mittoo, Grey
Boy All Stars, & Eddie Harris, as well as arrangements
of old school party classics and original material.

Exhibitions
We celebrate local talent with group exhibitions of local artists’ work at several venues and local shops and
businesses, so pop in and see them during opening hours. The Blue Hoarding Project will showcase young
talent, and The Streatham Schools’ Art Exhibition evolved as a result of it. Both projects bring people together
through the creativity of local children and young people. Community involvement and creative workshops
for all will feature during the Festival dates and continue as part of these Projects’ legacy.
THE BLUE HOARDING PROJECT
Streatham Festival invited local schools to take part in creating artwork depicting life in Streatham for a mural
design for the blue hoarding on the corner of Streatham High Rd and Kempshott Rd. Construction work
is underway on the site and the hoarding has been given a new purpose – to be a canvas of nearly 390m
2
.
The owners, Access Storage, have agreed to sponsor the art project and are delighted to support a great
community initiative. Local schools are helping generate an image bank of design ideas. Students were asked
to submit a piece of artwork refl ecting an aspect of Streatham life. The 10 best designs will be included in
the design for the mural on the hoarding. Proposals have been received from several community art project
companies, who will ensure a quality outcome. The successful proposal and design concept will be revealed
via the Festival website, www.streathamfestival.com, where there will be news on the Project’s progress. The
Project will begin in October.

Exhibitions
We celebrate local talent with group exhibitions of local artists’ work at several venues and local shops and businesses, so pop in and see them during opening hours. The Blue Hoarding Project will showcase young talent, and The Streatham Schools’ Art Exhibition evolved as a result of it. Both projects bring people together through the creativity of local children and young people. Community involvement and creative workshops for all will feature during the Festival dates and continue as part of these Projects’ legacy.
THE BLUE HOARDING PROJECT
Streatham Festival invited local schools to take part in creating artwork depicting life in Streatham for a mural design for the blue hoarding on the corner of Streatham High Rd and Kempshott Rd. Construction work is underway on the site and the hoarding has been given a new purpose – to be a canvas of nearly 390m
2
.
The owners, Access Storage, have agreed to sponsor the art project and are delighted to support a great community initiative. Local schools are helping generate an image bank of design ideas. Students were asked to submit a piece of artwork refl ecting an aspect of Streatham life. The 10 best designs will be included in the design for the mural on the hoarding. Proposals have been received from several community art project companies, who will ensure a quality outcome. The successful proposal and design concept will be revealed via the Festival website, www.streathamfestival.com, where there will be news on the Project’s progress. The
Project will begin in October.

ASK YOUR FAVOURITE LOCAL
InStreatham have just launched their electric cargo bike
last weekend at their monthly Streatham Village Market!
Customers can now request their shopping to be delivered
to their homes, simply ask your favourite shops if they offer
this service. It is a completely FREE service to all Streatham
BID businesses.
Goods vehicle movements in London have increased by
around 20 per cent since 2010 and this contributes to poor air
quality, congestion and road danger. We hope that this
shared cargo bike scheme will enable small and medium
sized independent businesses to replace cars and vans with
cycle freight.
InStreatham’s goal is to future-proof our town for success, a
vibrant high street lies at the heart of our ambitions with
spaces to work, eat, drink, shop, live and play. Streatham is a
unique town in that it is a key arterial route but a much-loved
local high street too! Over the years, Streatham has become
a magnet for shoppers and has grown into a hub of boutique
cafes and bars. As more people choose to dwell in
Streatham, now is a fitting time to look at what we can do
together to improve air quality.
If you’re a business interested in registering to use the bike,
please get in touch at [email protected] or
02088357067. All businesses will be given free cycle training
after which the bike can be booked free of charge using the
booking app on a first come, first serve basis.

Streatham's star summer signing,
Vanya Antonov, senses it could be a
special year for the R edHawks as
Adam Carr's squad look to build
on a strong start to the season.
Pre-season optimism proved well
founded. The team posted an 8-2
win over Slough Jets in their opening
game after having despatching a strong
Bracknell side twice in pre-season.
Nine new signings arrived in South London this
summer including Moscow-born Antonov, a
former GB international player, who was signed
from Bracknell Bees. He lived up to the hype in
front of and enthusiastic opening night crowd,
scoring a hat trick on his debut!
The RedHawks are highly fancied to challenge
for league honours this year, with fans hoping
the team can end a decades-long trophy
drought. Antonov's form will be a key factor
in any success so the news he is enjoying his
time at the club is to be welcomed. "There’s an
amazing atmosphere in the changing
room and you can feel that this
season is going to be special, " he
commented.

Ice Hockey is widely considered to be the
fastest team sport in the world played
on two feet! Streatham is lucky to have
one of the only ice-hockey clubs in
London, and equally lucky to have one
of the best youth teams in the country
with the Streatham Youth Ice Hockey
Club (S YIHC) having won multiple national
championships in recent years.
Ice Hockey is played by two teams of up to 15
players with 6 players normally on the ice at
each time. It is often viewed in the UK as a
violent sport but, at the youth level, nothing
could be further from the truth. Instead, it is
a fast paced, highly creative sport that builds
both individual and team skills that we like –
teamwork, decision making, sportsmanship. and
leadership.
SYIHC offers programmes for various age
groups, including Learn to Play (LTP), Under
9 (U9), U11, U13, U15 and U18 - all taught
and coached by certified English Ice Hockey
Association coaches.
The LTP programme teaches kids (ages
4-13) basic hockey skills in a fun, safe
environment. Players are introduced
to the fundamentals of hockey skating
before going on to the finer details of
the game. For new entrants to the LTP
programme, S YIHC can lend all the equipment
needed, and offers two trial sessions free of charge.
Ice-hockey will leave you and your children
exhilarated. Give it a try! www.S YIHC.com
