High Frequency Unit

High frequency Unit
The unit uses an alternating, oscillating current.
This produces a high frequency current of 100,000 to 250,000 Herts
(cycles per second)
The electrode contains an induction coil-this produces a high electrical
force

The electrode is a conductor through which electricity enters or leaves.

High Frequency Current

•Large facial bulb – used for direct method face & body
•Small facial bulb – used for direct method on small areas
•Neck electrode – used for direct method on the neck and back areas
•Roller electrode – used for direct method on the body, does not spark
•Saturator – used for indirect method only

Application
Indirect – the current flows through the client's body using
the therapist’s hands to perform massage, which conducts
the current. The client holds the saturator electrode.
Direct – application is directly on the skin using a glass
electrode.

Direct Treatment Procedure
1. Cleanse skin and carry out sensitivity tests
2. Insert electrode into holder
3. Set switch to ‘on’ and check intensity is at zero
4. Test machine on yourself in front of your client and reassure her
regarding buzzing noise
5. Turn off, apply medium (talc or oxygenating cream) and gauze to client’s face or back
area
6. Wipe the electrode with disinfectant
7. Apply the electrode by placing the finger in contact with the electrode before turning
the machine on, then turn the intensity dial up. Then place both fingers and electrode
in contact with the client’s skin before removing the finger.
8. Continue with circular movements over the skin do not break contact
9. The treatment is between 8-12 minutes depending on skin condition e.g.. Oily skin -10
-12 minutes, Dry skin – 3-5 min
10.Sparking if necessary on pustules & papules ensuring the electrode is no more than
7mm away from the skin
11.Reverse procedure No 7 to remove electrode
12.Remove medium and tone, proceed with massage, mask, tone & moisturise

Wipe electrode with surgical spirit

Week 2
Recap skin types & relate to HF (Task)
P24- Describe the effects & benefits of HF (direct) & indirect on
underlying structures (Task & You tube clip)
P1 Prepare themselves, client and work area for facial treatment (20
minutes)
P2 use suitable consultation techniques to identify treatment objectives
(use of open & closed questions - 5 minutes)
Identify appropriate methods application relating to skin ?type, age or
ethnicity & perform both methods of ?frequency
P5 select products, tools and equipment to suit client treatment needs,
skin types and condition
Demonstrate a safe & effective treatment (Risk ?assessment task)
P4 provide clear recommendations to the client

Indirect Treatment Procedure
Test machine and electrodes for any faults
1.Cleanse skin and carry out sensitivity tests
2.Insert saturator into holder
3.Set switch to ‘on’ and check intensity is at zero
4.Test machine on yourself in front of your client
5.Turn off, apply medium to client’s face or back area
6.Apply talc to client’s; wipe saturator with
disinfectant and place firmly in holder
7.Place one hand in contact with client’s skin, using
small circular movements while the other hand
turns the intensity dial slowly up to suit client’s
tolerance.
8.Place the other hand on to the skin by sliding over
the first hand and begin your usual massage
routine. Ensure contact is not broken e.g.. No
tapotement movements

Indirect Treatment Procedure
9. Check client comfort and sensation throughout massage
10. Treatment duration is between 8 & 12 minutes depending on skin reaction
11. At the end of the treatment take one hand off, reducing current intensity on
dial and turning the machine off, before removing other hand.
12. Remove massage medium and continue with facial, tone, mask and
moisturise.
