High School Cliques
Think of 5 cliques that you had in high school. Describe each one of them.

1. Band Geeks- the band geeks were the group of kids who played in the
band, danced in color guard or sang in the show choir. These students stuck
together and didn’t normally talk to anyone else. They were one big, happy
family. Usually they stayed after school for practice.
2. Jocks- the jocks were the students, typically male, that usually played a
sport, whether it be football, basketball, or baseball. They didn’t normally
do so well academically and chose to skip school a lot.
3. Preps- the preps, in my high school, were the cheerleaders and girls
who were wealthy. They normally acted like they were better than
everyone else. They wore the high end clothes, and usually a teacher’s pet
to keep their grades up.
4. Rednecks- the redneck kids were typically in FFA. They were gone many
times for the conventions. They were rough on the outside, didn’t get along
with many of the others. They were in many fights.
5. Smarties- the smart students who only focused on school and did
homework/studying in their free time. They were always at the school
involved with academic extracurricular activities.
In our discussion in class, we talked about how these different groups of people were “all”
like that, when they’re not. It’s stereotyping these individuals into the groups we thought
they belonged to during high school. Even though many students who fit into these cliques
then, don’t now, and some still do. It’s all based on the individual’s personality and goals. We
discussed how many of the individuals that were in one cliques also belonged to another. To
summarize, stereotyping people into different cliques/groups is an inaccurate assumption as
to who they are as an individual.
