HIGH SPEED LAN PRESENTED BY M.RAMYA M.SC[CS&IT]

HIGH –SPEED LAN’S Speed and power of personal computers has increased. LAN viable essential computing platform. Client / server computing dominant architecture. Web – focused intranet. Frequent transfer of potentially large volumes of data in a transaction – oriented environment. 10-Mbps Ether net and 16 –Mbps token ring not up to job.

CHARACTERISTICS OF HIGH – SPEED LAN’s

USES OF HIGH-SPEED LAN’S Centralized Server Farms Client system draw huge amount of data from multiple centralized servers. Example- Color publishing Servers holds tens of gigabytes of image data that must be downloaded to workstations. Power workgroups Small number of users drawing data across network. Example – Software development group, computer – aided design(CAD). High – speed local backbone LAN’s grow at a site. High = speed interconnection is necessary.

Extension made to older LAN standards to get higher data transmission speeds: Fast Ether net – 100 Mbps for Bus networks. Gigabit Ether net – 1Gbps. FDDI – 100 Mbps for Token Rings. ATM LAN’s

USAGE OF LAN A work to internet connection would most likely require broadcast network (LAN) with a connection to the internet (packet switched network).

THE EMERGENCE OF HIGH – SPEED LANs Trends Computing power of PCs has continued to grow. MIS organizations recognize the importance of LANs in the transfer of large volumes of data in a transaction oriented environment.

TYPES OF COMMUNICATION NETWORKS Traditional Traditional local area network(LAN) Traditional wide area network(WAN) Higher – speed High – speed local area network(LAN) Metropolitan area network(MAN) High – speed wide area network(WAN)

FRAME TRANSMISSION ON THE LINE LAN

ETHERNET ALN NETWORK CABLE

BACKBONE NETWORK(BN) Backbone Network – a large high – speed central network that connects all the terminals, microcomputers, mainframes, local area networks, and other communications equipment on a single company or site. Some times called Campus Area Network(CAN). Use Higher speed circuit for connectivity.

FAST LAN’s Advances in transmission speed and distance. Technology FDDI Fast Ethernet Application Inter – LAN backbones 100Mb / s and upper bandwidth is needed
