4. Modern Nursing in India (British Period – 18th & 19th Century) Modern scientific medicine and nursing came to India with the British East India Company . Hospitals were built mainly for British soldiers , later for Indian population. Influence of Florence Nightingale after the Crimean War (1850s) inspired organized nursing services worldwide, including India. 1885 – First nursing school started at St. Stephen’s Hospital, Delhi to train Indian Christian women. 1897 – Midwifery training school started in Madras (now Chennai). Later, more schools were opened in Calcutta, Bombay, and other regions. At first, nursing was not respected, because society considered it a low-status job. Only widows and poor women joined. Slowly it became recognized.
5. 20th Century Development After the 1900s , demand for trained nurses increased. Many missionary hospitals and government hospitals opened nursing schools. Indian Nursing Council (INC) was established in 1947 (after independence) under an Act of Parliament to: Maintain standards of nursing education. Register nurses and midwives. Approve nursing schools/colleges. State Nursing Councils were also formed in different states. Nursing education expanded: GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery) diploma. B.Sc. Nursing degree courses in universities. Post-graduate and Ph.D. level nursing programs started.
