Biography
Hizze Fletcher was born in Sheffield, England in 1965.
Hizze's childhood was marked by the colourful explosion of American music
and cultural influences that dominated English society in the 60's and 70's.
This early influence of 20
th
century American art and iconic imagery,
combined with an upbringing inspired by strong females such as Madonna,
magazines such as The Face and ID, and a passion for fashion, come
together to create work that is bold, expressive, textured and graphical. A
clubber since the age of 14, music plays a huge role in Hizze’s life and the
use of gloss in her paintings has been likened to the vibrations of musical
frequency. She cites her early artistic influences as Andy Warhol, Jean Michel
Basquiat, Niki de Saint Phalle and Jackson Pollock
Hizze became involved in the beginnings of the House music scene in London
after graduating from art school in 1989 and has gone on to work in events
production for 20 years, doing arts production for clubs, fashion shows,
exhibitions, theme parties and television. From 1998- 2002 Hizze worked as a
commercial mosaic artist in London, producing work for bars/ restaurants,
public buildings and television.
Hizze has been pursuing her love of painting since 2000, exhibiting in Spain
and Brighton. Since moving to Brighton in 2006 Hizze has conceptualised and
produced a number of group-art exhibitions in the city, most notably ‘One
Hundred Artists for World Aids Day’ in 2008.
“People fascinate me, the way we move, the way we think, the way we look. I
am inspired yet aggrieved by the human race: our sociology, our psychology,
our beauty, our grace, our labelling and our prejudices. Our obsession with
money and belief systems is constant, the depth of our true ability ignored and
repressed.”
“If you can free yourself you can truly express yourself. I feel privileged to be
able to live my life through my art.”
