2. INTRODUCTION Home visit is the backbone of the community health nursing. It fulfils the needs of the individual, family and community. It is a family nurse contact which allows the health worker to assess the home and family situation in order to provide the necessary nursing care and health related services.

3. DEFINITION A home visit is defined as the process of providing the nursing care to patients at their doorstep. It is defined as the delivery of specialized nursing care services in the home setting. Home visit is a purposeful and deliberate psychological activity undertaken by health team member for meeting the diagnostic and therapeutic needs of the family .

CONCEPTS OF HOME VISIT Provide opportunity to make direct observation on home environment, family structure, familial roles and relationships, lifestyle, cultural practices, group dynamics etc. In home visit the members are relaxed, have more time and privacy and feel free to raise questions. Provide opportunities to contact and interact with most of the family members and establish rapport. Allows active participation of family members

5. PURPOSES OF HOME VISIT To find out need of individual, family, and community. To provide basic health services To provide counseling on family planning, immunization, nutrition etc To give health teaching regarding prevention and control of diseases. To establish a close relationship between the nurses and public for promotion of health. To make use of inter referral system and to promote the utilization of community services. To identify the sources of communicable diseases. To improve health standard of family.

10. ADVANTAGES OF HOME VISIT Provide excellent opportunity in implementing the nursing process. Provide opportunity to study the home and family situation. Provide opportunity to render services to the family members at their own surroundings. Creates a good understanding between nurses and family. Clarify doubts raised by the family member .
