B.Sc. III Paper No. VIII Section II “ Horticulture , Forestery and Herbal Technology ” A. Introduction and Importance : The word Horticulture was derived from two latin word Hortus – means Garden, Culture- means knowledge of growing these crops. In English Horticulture word was first mentioned by E. Phillips (1678) . “ Horticulture is a science of studying garden plants.” “ Horticulture is an aesthetic science that deals with the important crops which are grown in the gardens.” “ Horticulture can be defined as the branch of agriculture concerned with intensively cultured plants directly used by people for food, for medicinal purpose or for aesthetic gratification “.
Branches of Horticulture : Olericulture : Latin word Oleris – Herb (Pot) “ Olericulture is the science of vegetable crops.” “ This branch deals with the study of vegetable crops.” Importance : 1. Provides continuous flow of income to farmers throughout the year. 2. Leguminous vegetables fix atmospheric nitrogen and make it available to the plant and also improve soil fertility. 3. Vegetables like French Bean, Coe pea , Cabbage provide nutritive fodder for animals. 4. Demond for vegetables in the market is very high. 5. Vegeatble seed production is a commercial business so as to provide pure seeds.
Pomology / Pomoculture : Latin word Pomum – Fruits Logy – Science “ Pomlogy is the science of production of fruit crops. ” “ This branch deals with the study of different fruit crops.” Importance : 1. Important diet for human health development. 2. Different types of vitamins and minerals are found. 3. Medicinal value. 4. Increase food production per unit area. 5. Create opportunity for agro based industries. 6. Source of timber and fuel.
Floriculture and Ornamental Gardening : “ Floriculture is the science of flower production.” “ This branch of horticulture covers flower crops and ornamental plants.” “ Floriculture is concerned with the cultivation of flowering and ornamental plants for gardens.” Importance : 1. Provides continuous flow of income to the farmer throughout year. 2. Export potential for flowers is increasing. 3. Indian flowers such as Rose, Orchids, Anthurium have received global recognition. 4. Create employment opportunity. 5. Create opportunity for Cosmetics, Perfumery industry. Post harvest technology and preservation : “ Study of post harvest handling , marketing and processing of horticultural crops is covered under this branch.”
Importance of Horticulture : 1. Horticulture crops are a source of variability in farm produce and diets. 2. They are a source of nutrients, vitamins, minerals, flavor, aroma, dietary, fibres etc. 3. They contain health benefiting compounds and medicines. 4. These crops have aesthetic value and protect the environment. 5. The comparative production per unit area of horticulture crop is higher than field crops. 6. Fruits and plantation crops can be cultivated in places where the slope of land is uneven or undulating. Mango and Cashewnut are cultivated on a large scale in hilly and hill back area of the Konkan region. 7. The crops are useful for cultivation in wasteland or poor quality soil. 8. Such crops are high value , labour intensive and generate employment throughout the year. 9. Horticulture produces serves as raw material for various industries such as processing, pharamaceutical , perfumery and cosmetics, chemical, confectionery, oils and paints etc. They have national and international demand and are a good source of foreign exchange.
