HOUSING SYSTEM OF SHEEP AND GOAT Prepared by: Urusha Ghimire HICAST Prepared by: Urusha Ghimire

INTRODUCTION Sheep and goats are the reared for meat, milk and wool. Both readily adapt to a wide range of climates and available feed supplies. They also have similar housing requirements and will therefore be treated together.

Housing keeps them safe from thieves and predatory animals. Protection from excessive heat, worms, enviromental disasters and bad climate. If adequate ventillation , space, good drainage provided, the milk and meat production increases.

Different system of rearing sheep and goats EXTENSIVE SYSTEM This system can be adopted if grazing land is available where goats are allowed to browse on free range and provided with shelter during night time. INTENSIVE SYSTEM This method is suitable in urban areas where there is scarcity of land. In this method goats are confined exclusively in sheds and fed on leaves/grass and concentrates

SEMI-INTENSIVE It is an intermediate compromise between extensive and intensive system followed in some flocks having limited grazing.  In this system the goats are allowed to go out of the shed for a few hours daily. Tethering   Tied with a rope to tree or on a peg and they will be able to browse from the surrounding

Types of housing system 1)Urban housing- Slatted housing system 2) Rural housing- Ground level housing system

Urban housing system Slatted Housing System wooden plank or wire mesh is placed about 3-4 ft from the ground level. External parasitic infestation is usually less in this method.

Rural housing system Ground level housing system A small shed with good cross ventilation is enough to keep a small herd. Litter height should be atleast 6cms. The litter material has to be turned periodically to remove the bad odour in the pen. Litter material should be replaced once in  every 2 weeks. Each goat and sheep requires about 15 sq.ft area. care should be taken to reduce the external parasitic infestation.

Ground level housing system

Mangers The manger may be either of cement concrete or of wood with two compartments for providing feed and hay
