How to describe a photo C2.1 level EOI CARABANCHEL
Presentation of the Photo Title or topic: Introduce the photo by stating its title and the artist’s name, setting the stage for the analysis.
Description of the photo I Subject Matter : Provide a detailed description of the image Subject Matter: What kind of photo is it? (people, landscape, animals, etc.) Structure: Describe what can be seen within the image, what is happening, in detail. Example: - Type: A portrait of a young man. - Details: The young man is depicted sitting on a chair, with a serene expression on his face.
I Description of the photo II Specific Verbs: Utilize specific verbs to describe the image: to depict, to show, to represent, to illustrate, to portray. Positioning of Elements: Discuss the positioning of elements within the composition, using passive structures where appropriate. Foreground : In the foreground, there is a woman sitting on a bench. Background : In the background, we can see a mountain range. At the top/bottom/on the top-right/left side/ on the bottom right/left side : At the top we can see the tree branches… Language used for a good description
Impression of the photo I Overall Impression: Discuss the overall impression the image conveys, including feelings and emotional responses it elicits from the viewer. Depth : It gives the impression of depth. Liveliness : The scene seems to be alive, looks as if it were alive. Focus : The viewer’s attention is focused on the central figure. Emotional effect: Feelings : The image makes the viewer feel calm and at ease, contemplative. Descriptors : The photo/the image is vivid, happy, sad, expressive, dramatic, dreamlike, lyrical, powerful, upsetting, distressing, impressive, heart-breaking, outstanding, colourful . Created Atmosphere : peaceful, gloomy, serene, calm, surreal, sad, etc.
I mpression of the photo II Techniques and colours used to cause that effect Techniques and shapes : Geometric shapes, linear patterns: e.g. Geometric shapes are used to create a sense of order and structure. Colors : Warm colors (yellow, orange, red) to evoke a feeling of warmth and comfort and cold colors (blue, purple, green) to make us feel sad/to express……... Others: pale/bright, brilliant/soft, light/dark.
Intention and Interpretation of the Image Look at different ways to express the message of the photo Themes : The theme, in my view, is…death, The problem illustrated here is… Symbols : The sea symbolizes freedom and vastness. Interpretation : The artist probably wants to expres s the beauty of nature/c riticise/show…/it seems/appears to me… Highlight : What the artist wants to point out/highligh t is the harmony between humans and nature.
Language C2.1 Try to use some complex structures, for example inversion. Not only does the artist try to show….but he also wants to illustrate…. or cleft sentences: What the photographer wants to evoke here is… More complex vocabulary
