How To Format A Computer Formatting A computer involves erasing all of the data on the computer’s hard drive, and then reinstalling the operating system so that the computer is restored to factory defaults. This can be useful if your computer is malfunctioning, or you are planning on selling or donating it. Follow this guide to format your windows 7 or mac OS X computer.

3. When you format a computer, you will lose all of your files and data. The program can’t be backed up; they will need to be reinstalled. Any files including documents, music, picture, and videos that you want to save need to be copied to a backup location. Backup your Data You can use DVDs, CDs, external hard drives, flash drives, or the cloud, depending on how much data you have to backup.

4. Set your BIOS to boot form CD. To do this, restart the computer and enter the setup screen when the manufacturer logo appears. The key to do this will be displayed, and varies by manufacturer. The most common keys are F2,F10, F12, and Del. Once in the BIOS menu, select the Boot menu, Change the order of devise so that your computer boots from the hard drive. Save your changes and exit. Your computer will restart. If you are installing from a flash drive, then you will need to set the BIOS to boot from removable storage.

5. Begin Setup If the CD has been inserted and the BIOS is set correctly, you will see a message telling you to “Press any key to boot from CD…” Press a key on the setup process for Windows 7 will launch. Your system may automatically launch the setup program without asking you to press any key

6. Watch the windows files load After you press a key, windows will load installation files.

9. Click Install Now to proceed

14. If you don’t have enough free space to Install Windows 7, you will receive the following warning

15. If that’s the case, you will need to format the partition where you previously had Operating System installed. WARNING: Formatting a partition will erase all existing data on the partition, proceed only if you have backed up all your files! If you want to format the partition, go to Drive options

16. and format the partition where you want to install windows 7. Again, do this only if you have backed up your documents/files! click format and then yes

17. After you press Next, Windows 7 Installation will begin. Approximately takes about 30 min to 1 hour to finish, depending on your computer speed.

18. After half an hour, setup is complete and windows 7 installation is almost finished. Few more minutes

19. Now your computer will reboot, since the Windows 7 DVD boot disk is still in the drive, the message press any key to boot from DVD will appear. We already did that, so this time  DO NOT press anything . Just wait 5 sec and your PC will continue booting and finish installing your operating system.

20. Windows will continue booting and installing, almost there!

21. Finally! Insert your name (this will be your windows username)
