How to Manage Byproducts in Odoo 17 Manufacturing Enterprise

Introduction Enterprise In Manufacturing module of Odoo, the Byproduct is the residual/secondary product that are produced incidentally during the manufacturing of the main product. These byproducts can be used for extra purposes and can reduce the waste and improve overall operational efficiency. For eg: While manufacturing a Chair or table, extra wood waste can be produced as byproduct. This does not have direct impact on Sales rather it can be used for polishing, as fuels, etc.

Enterpr ise The By Product can be enabled from the Configuration Settings of the Manufacturing module so that we can just manage with the unintentional creation of the products.

Enterprise To illustrate the concept of byproducts during manufacturing, let's take an example of manufacturing a Wooden Chair which require the components Wood panel and Bolts while creating and the residual product that will get created will be Wood waste . Let's create all these four products in the inventory as storable products with corresponding Sales price and costs needed.

Enterprise In order to manufacture the wooden chair, we need to ensure that the Route ‘Manufacture’ is enabled for it under the Inventory Tab

Enterprise Also, create a BoM(Bill of Material) for this Wooden Chair product from the Manufacturing module’s Products->Bill Of Materials menu. The components Wood panel 2 pcs and Bolt 15 pcs are selected. Also we can give the we Quantity of chairs needed and the BoM Type also. We are just just keeping the BoM type as Manufacture this product.

Enterprise Here, we assume that, after the Cutting operation, the residual product Wooden waste will be formed. Once every panel is cut, the final assembling will be done from the workstation Assembly Line 1 Also, under the Operations tab, we can set the operations to be done for the production of the item. Here, we’ve just created Cutting and Assembling with the corresponding Work stations and Duration

Enterprise The Byproducts detail can be set under the By-products tab in the same view. We can give the quantity, cost sharing % and the operation in which the by products are created, etc

Enterprise Let’s open the smart button BoM Overview on top of the view. This shows the details of the BoM such as the product details, quantity, cost, lead time, route, etc along with the By products and the operations involved in the manufacturing process.

Enterprise Now, lets create a Manufacturing Order for the Wooden Chair from the menu Operations->Manufacturing Orders and click on New. By selecting the early created BoM for Wooden chair for the MO, we can see all the details of components, operations and By-products, duration, cost, etc will be getting auto filled.

Enterprise Then, click on Confirm button on top to confirm the MO. Now, head to the Work Orders tab of the MO to see the details. Since all the components have sufficient stock in the warehouse, the Component Status is Available.

Enterprise We can click on the Start button to begin the needed operation. The Expected duration will be filled as in the BoM and the timer will start and once we start the process and Real duration will be auto updated . Once every operation is completed, click on Produce All button on top left.

Enterprise We can see two new smart buttons Traceability and Product Moves On top of the form view as The former one is used to track the movement and origin of products and materials throughout the manufacturing process and the latter once just gives the report of the products involved in the whole manufacturing process including the by-products.

Enterprise The Traceability report shows the details of the manufactured product and its components and by products with the location details where the are maintained

Enterprise And the Product Moves report gives the detail of the movement of all the products as in the figure. The newly created products’ quantity will be in green color indicating an increase in the stock and the component products’ quantity will be in red color which means a the deduction from the stock.
