How to Teach Reading Welcome to this presentation on how to teach reading. Whether you're a teacher, parent or caregiver, this guide will provide you with the tools and strategies you need to help children become better readers. by Mahmoud Zarzoura

The Importance of Reading 1 Builds Vocabulary 🗣️ Reading helps children develop a rich vocabulary, which is important for communication and academic success. 2 Develops Imagination 🧠 Reading encourages children to use their imagination and helps them develop creativity and critical thinking skills. 3 Fosters Empathy ❤️ Reading exposes children to diverse perspectives and experiences, helping them become more empathetic and understanding. 4 Improves Concentration 🧘 Reading requires sustained attention, which helps improve concentration and focus in all areas of life.

Phonics What is Phonics? Phonics is the method of teaching reading by correlating sounds with letters or groups of letters in a systematic and explicit way. Why is it important? Phonics instruction helps children learn to decode words on their own, which is key to becoming independent readers. How to Teach it? Use a variety of multisensory activities, such as games and songs, that engage children and make phonics instruction fun and relevant.

Sight Words What are Sight Words? High frequency words that students need to recognise quickly and accurately in order to become fluent readers. Why are they important? Sight words make up a large percentage of all text, so being able to recognise them allows students to read with speed and comprehension. How to Teach them? Use fun and interactive activities, such as sight word bingo and sight word dice games, that engage children and provide ample practice.

Reading Comprehension 1 Before Reading Activate prior knowledge by asking questions and making connections to the text. 2 During Reading Teach strategies like visualising, predicting, questioning, summarising and monitoring comprehension to help students understand the text. 3 After Reading Engage students in a variety of activities such as discussion, retelling and writing to help reinforce comprehension and deepen understanding.

Fluency What is Fluency? The ability to read with speed, accuracy and expression. Why is it important? Fluent readers are able to focus on comprehension rather than decoding, which helps them better understand the text. How to Improve it? Provide students with plenty of practice, using strategies like repeated reading, echo reading and choral reading to build fluency.

Assessment Why is Assessment Important? Assessment helps teachers determine student progress and identify areas where additional support is needed. What Types of Assessments are Available? There are a variety of assessments available, ranging from informal observations to standardised assessments. How to Use Assessment? Use assessment results to guide instructional decisions and provide targeted interventions that support student learning.

Activities to Encourage Reading Practice 1 In the Classroom Set up a reading corner with comfortable seats, bean bags and a variety of books. Encourage independent reading and provide time for book talks and book sharing. 2 At Home Establish a daily reading routine that includes reading aloud, silent reading and discussions about the books. Provide access to a variety of reading material and encourage trips to the library. 3 In the Community Partner with local businesses and libraries to provide reading programs, book clubs and author visits. Host book fairs and encourage community members to donate books to support literacy.
