HELICOPTER SAFETY AND TRAVEL HELICOPTER SAFETY AND TRAVEL
PROCEDURES PROCEDURES

A modern Helicopter is...
•A safe and efficient form of
travel
¿Why?
•Crew qualifications and
experience
•Enforcement of maintenance
standards and requirements
•Technological
improvements
INTRODUCTION TO HELICOPTER SAFETY INTRODUCTION TO HELICOPTER SAFETY

BUT BUT
STILL, ACCIDENTS HAPEN…

There are two kinds of ditching accidents
•Controlled ditching
•Uncontrolled ditching
Statistics show us that:
•There are 2 water immersions / 100 thousand flight hrs.
•92% of passengers survive when they have more than 1
minute of warning
•78% of passengers survive when they have more than 15
seconds of warning
HELICOPTER DITCHING REVIEW HELICOPTER DITCHING REVIEW

Survive from a Ditch in a aerial ship may
depend on:
•KNOWLEDGE
•TRAINING
•PREPARATION
•ATTITUDE
Your survival ability may depend of your attitude. Your survival ability may depend of your attitude.

COLLISION SURVIVALCOLLISION SURVIVAL

Before Flight
Arrive to Heliport early and in
good conditions.
Make sure that you are in the
correct area of registration for
your destination.
Make sure that you have correct
travel documents
Register with the flight
dispatcher.
HELICOPTER TRAVEL PROCEDURES HELICOPTER TRAVEL PROCEDURES

•Physical and baggage
weight are verified
carefully.
•The maximum weight of
baggage is 10kg – 22 lb
•Don't pack heavy or
unnecessary articles.

HELICOPTER TRAVEL PROCEDURES HELICOPTER TRAVEL PROCEDURES

It can be given in many ways
•Information session by video
•Information session by cards
•Information session by the pilot, flights controller or medic
Subjects covered during these informative sessions includes
•Dangerous points in and around the helicopter
•Lifejackets
•Life rafts
•Emergency equipment
•Emergency actions
•Restrictions – smoke, alcohol, drugs, etc.
SAFETY INFORMATION ABOUT HELICOPTERSAFETY INFORMATION ABOUT HELICOPTER

HELICOPTER DANGEROUS AREAS HELICOPTER DANGEROUS AREAS

The speed of rotation of the
tail rotor makes it almost
invisible when it rotates.
If you get in contact with it,
in any moment
YOU WILL LOSE THE FIGHT.

HELICOPTER EMERGENCIESHELICOPTER EMERGENCIES

The biggest causes of lesions and death on helicopter ditching are;
•Disorientation
•Panic – Phobia – Fear
•Inability to remain afloat or swim
•Ignorance or lack of knowledge of the safety equipment on board
and survival procedures
•MISUNDERSTANDING of evacuation under water and technical
procedures.
DITCH ACCIDENTSDITCH ACCIDENTS

To have your own emergency plan will increase
possibilities to survive and leave the aircraft alive
•Primary and Secondary exits
•Operation of the release mechanisms for each exit
•Reference points / routes / procedures to find the
action mechanisms in bad visibility.
•Ditching procedures
•Escape procedures

For a successful exit you must always
remember the survival sequence

Now, let’s practice this
pre-ditching
procedures

The aircraft floaters are activated
manually by the pilot, the helicopter
lands under control on water surface
and keeps floating
•Aircraft deactivation – remain seated
•Wait for crew instructions
•Throw window to sea
•Verify that the rotors have stopped
•Throw the life rafts
•Controlled exit from helicopter into rafts
•Start immediate life raft actions

LIFE RAFTS LOCATIONLIFE RAFTS LOCATION

The helicopter executes an emergency
landing on land or heliport
•Fallow crew instructions
•Before leaving, be careful with the principal and tail rotor.
•If the helicopter has landed on a slope – exit on the down
slope side only
•Take emergency equipment if time permits
•Move to a position upwind of helicopter if fire starts
•Stay in close proximity to helicopter as the searchers will find
the aircraft fuselage easier to spot
•Start survival procedures
EMERGENCY LANDING ON LAND/HELIDECKEMERGENCY LANDING ON LAND/HELIDECK

DO NOT EXIT AIRCRAFT
UNTIL ALL ROTOR
MOVEMENT HAS STOPED

Aircraft impacts water surface
•Take a DEEP RELAXED BREATH before immersion
•WAIT UNTIL ALL MOTION HAS CEASED , wait and wait
and count 7 seconds
•STAY STRAPPED IN
•Verify orientation
•Open the exit window
•Secure your grabs
•Release your seatbelt
•Pull yourself out using your arms only - Do not kick
•Surface – be aware of garbage / fuel
•Start sea survival procedures
ESCAPE UNDER WATERESCAPE UNDER WATER

THE AIRCRAFT
