Human Adaptation on New Challenges in the Physical, Social and Cultural Environment
OBJECTIVES identify the new challenges to human adaptation and social change; explain the effect of global warming, climate change and transmigration of families and values; examine human responses to emerging challenges in contemporary societies.
“As human beings we do change, grow, adapt, perhaps even learn and become wiser” -Wendy Carlos-
Humans are generally adaptive to changes in the environment Adaptation is not always easy and not something simple.
ADAPTATION A change or the process of change by which an organism or species becomes better suited to its environment is called adaptation
Social Change In anthropology and sociology, refers to the modification of mechanism, means methods or systems within the social structure, characterized by alterations in social relationship, social order, social symbols, social organizations, values system or rules od behavior. Examples of social change include industrial revolution, the abolition of slavery, the civil rights movement and the women’s suffrage movement, etc.
Cultural Change It could be seen in the practices, institutions, technology, societal laws, ethos or mores (moral norms), manners, value systems, customs, traditions, habits, beliefs, arts, music, and literatures. Some of the examples are changes in the manner of choosing a spouse and adopting a new lifestyle.
Political Change It denotes alterations in the governmental aspect of a society, such as changes in the administrative, executive, legislative, judicial, and constitutional processes, systems, and structures. Examples are constitutional amendments and the shift from presidential to parliamentary form of government
GLOBAL WARMING AND CLIMATE CHANGE
Did you feel the extreme heat of the summer season? Are you wondering why this year’s summer is hotter than last summer?
Global warming and Climate Change Global warming Is the increase in the Earth’s temperature caused by greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide. Climate Change Is a result of global warming. It is considered as a long-term shift that happens in the Earth’s atmosphere.
The causes and Effects of Global Warming and Climate Change The change in climate may natural be caused by Earth’s activities like volcanic activity, its orbit around the sun, and many others Man –made causes, on the other hand, greatly contribute to the worsening of global warming and climate change. Some examples that contribute to the phenomenon are burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gases, and continuously converting forests (deforestation) into industrial, agricultural or residential lands.
Mitigation is another term for adaptation to climate change which is defined as technological change and substitution that reduces resource inputs and emissions per unit of output.
Several ways of mitigation include the following: 1. Using efficient energy generation technology.
Hydropower is one of the main sources of renewable energy in the Philippines.
Several ways of mitigation include the following: 2. Using more efficient energy end user technology. End-user computing (EUC) is a term that refers to the technologies that IT professionals use to deploy, manage and secure the devices, applications and data that workers require to perform their jobs .
Several ways of mitigation include the following: 3. Replacing fossil fuels with none or low carbon emitting energy generating technology such as renewable energy sources or nuclear energy. Low-carbon emitting technologies (LCET) are referred to as innovative technical solutions that are characterized by a low emission intensity, compared to state of the art alternatives .
Solar Hot water Solar water heating system is a device that helps in heating water by using the energy from the SUN .
Air source heat pumps An air - source heat pump can provide efficient heating and cooling for your home.
Several ways of mitigation include the following: 4. Adopting a more sustainable natural resource management. sustainable resources include hydropower, solar power and wind power , to name a few.
Several ways of mitigation include the following: 5. Harvesting or extraction technologies and practice.
Transnational Migration and Overseas Filipino Workers The process of geographic mobility or the change of residence of a person from one community to another with the intention of settling temporarily or permanently is migration.
There are three types of mobility or migration namely: International Migration is the permanent transfer of residence from one country to another. It is the change of residence over national boundaries. An international migrant is someone who moves to a different country. International migrants can be further classified as legal immigrants , illegal immigrants and refugee .
Legal immigrants are those who moved with the legal permission of the receiver nation. Illegal immigrants are those who moved without legal permission, refugees are those crossed an international boundary to escape persecution.
Internal Migration is a change in residence within a country and refers to a change of residence within national boundaries, such as between states, provinces, cities, or municipalities. An internal migrant is someone who moves to a different administrative territory.
Circulation Migration is a temporary movement of a person. The change in residence is temporary due to work or study, but the migrant will definitely return in his home community.
A new form of migration is termed as transnational migration. These are the people who having migrated from one nation-state to another live their lives across borders, participating simultaneously in social relations that embed them in more than one nation-state are called transnational migrants.
Not all migrants can be considered as transnational migrants , and not all who take part in transnational practices do so all the time. Most migrants are occasional transnational activists. They more focused on their countries of origin while at others they are more involved in their countries of reception.
Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW)
Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) is a person of Filipino origin who works and lives outside the country. This term applies to Filipinos who are abroad indefinitely as citizens or as permanent residents of a different country and to those Filipino citizens who are abroad for a limited, definite period as workers or as students.
What are the effects on family of migrants? Children of migrant workers have grown up not knowing both of their parents and have experienced long term absence of parents which is the reason why there is very little affection between them.
What are the effects on family of migrants? Many family relationships are broken as one parent emigrates which causes a larger proportion of children growing up with divorced or separated parents.
1. The process of change by which an organism or species becomes better suited to its environment a. Adaptation b. Climate change c. Migration d. Mitigation
2. A technological change and substitution that reduces resource inputs and emissions per unit of output . Adaptation Climate change Migration Mitigation
3. This kind of migration exists when a person is moved against his will such as slaves, or when the move is initiated because of external factors like natural disaster or civil war . Circulatory migration Force Migration Internal Migration International Migration
4. Persons who moves to a different administrative territory . Illegal Migrants Legal Migrants Internal Migrants Refugees
5. The following are the challenges faced by transnational migrants, EXCEPT : Family Disruption Access to pensions and health insurance Loss of sense of identity and belongingness Making clear and tangible policies to address the issues
