REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM

Formation of new individuals.

The male and female reproductive system are regulated by the Neuroendocrine System - a single system involving endocrine and nervous system.

REPRODUCTIVE GLANDS Gonads serve 2 important functions: The production of gametes and the secretion of sex hormones.

The female gonads- the ovaries- produce eggs (ova).

The male gonads- the testes (Singular: Testis)- produce sperm.

SEXUAL DEVELOPMENT The development of the primary reproductive system- testes and ovaries- began on the seventh week.

Testes produce testosterone and the ovaries produce estrogen.

Neither the testes and ovaries are capable of producing active reproductive cells until puberty.

PUBERTY- a period of growth and sexual maturation becomes fully functional.

Begins when the hypothalamus signals the pituitary to produce increased levels of two hormones that affects the gonads.

Follicle-stimulating Hormones Luteinizing Hormone

MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM The release of FSH and LH stimulates the cells in the testes to produce testosterone.

The main function of the male reproductive system is to produce and deliver sperm.
