HUMANISTIC APPROACH TO MOTIVATION
MASLOW’S HIERARCHY OF NEEDS Theory of self –actualization was developed by Abraham Maslow He suggested that human have a hierarchy of needs ranging from lower –level need of survival and safety to higher –level needs for intellectual development and finally self-actualizati on
MaSlow’s hierarchy is as follows : Physiological needs Safety needs Belongingness and love needs The Esteem needs Self-Actualization need s
1.Physiological needs Include need for oxygen, water , food , sleep , rest and sex When an individual is deprived of basic needs , he certainly is motivated to do something – Need Deprivation
2.Safety needs I nclude need for feeling safe and secure in one’s life; and the absence of dange r
3.Belongingness and love needs Include need to have friends, to loved and accepted by other people, need for affiliation and to belong to a network of social relations
4.ESTEEM NEEDS Include need to develop self- respect,gain the recognition And approval of others, and to achieve success
5.SELF-ACTUALIZATION NEEDS The highest need in the hierarchical system Include the need for realizing one’s own individual potentialities and the need for self-fulfillment Important aspect - Freedom
