Integrated Ballistics Identification System

- Program controlled by the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms). - Software and programs which produces a digital history of Bullets, Casing and Cartridges.

- FBI and ATF joined forces and use a super power computer now to track Ballistic evidence left at crime scene. -Used to link multiple crimes to a single weapon.

- The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation ( FBI ) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives ( ATF ), both under the U.S. Department of Justice, developed independent imaging systems and databases to analyze and store ballistic images. - The FBI system was called Drugfire . -T he AFT system was named IBIS (Integrated Ballistics Identification System).

The IBIS uses sophisticated electronic and optical technology to digitally compare evidence stored in the database. - uses several computer programs to help identify firearms. uses:-

- IBIS equipment photographs the surface of fired bullets and casings from crime scenes and laboratories. - Upon entering a new image into the database, the system searches for a match by using advanced mathematical algorithms to correlate the new image against previously stored images.

-A forensic examiner then visually compares the matched images on a computer monitor. If a possible match is found, the images are compared with actual evidence by an examiner on a microscope for a final determination. - In the beginning of 2005, IBIS systems were used in over thirty countries by thirty-three local, provincial, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.

Investigators still must compare the items by hand and eye to determine that the two images, the image of the evidence and the database image, are indeed a match.

IBIS capture both cartridge cases and bullets:- Each uses a specialized S ensor : one adapted to the specific characteristics of cartridge cases, and the other to the microscopic bullet markings.

IBIS used to capture damaged bullets:- BULLETTRAX is the only system in the world that can capture bullets and fragments that have all kinds of damage.

Benefits of IBIS to Law Enforcement :- - Match previously unlinked violent firearm crimes. - Reduce the number of unsolved firearms cases.
