Ic analysis & phrase structure grammar Topic of Discussion… Background & Definition Approach of I.C. Analysis I.C. Analysis of Sentences Phrase Structure Grammar Examples Limitations of IC Analysis
Background & definition I.C. Analysis is a system of grammatical analysis that breakup sentences into sequential layers, or constituents until in the final layer, and every constituent consists of only a word or meaningful part of a word.
Approach of I.C. Analysis: The concept of constitute and constituent: The important thing to note here is the fact that constitute and constituent are relative terms. Morphemes as Ultimate Constituents: The proponents of IC analysis also emphasized that the ultimate constituents of a sentence are morphemes and not words.
I.C. Analysis of Sentences A single sentence is made up of an NP (subject) and a predicate phrase. This predicate phrase which is apart from a compulsory verbal group may optionally have: -one or more noun phrase(s) -Preposition Phrase -Adverbial and adjective phrases.

Phrase Structure Grammar 1. Phrase Structure Grammar is a type of grammar discussed by Noam Chomsky in his book Syntactic structure (1957) as an illustration of a generative device. 2. In such grammar the linguists are basically interested: in the constituent parts of a sentence, in the syntactic devices used to link the constituents together, and the ways in which various parts relate to each other.
Phrase Structure Rules Generally Phrase Structure Grammar takes the form of a set of rules, such as the following: S → NP+VP NP → Determiner + N VP → Verb + NP
