Australian Idioms
G'Day Definition Short for "good day," this is a classic Australian greeting used to say hello. Example Sentence "G'day mate! How's it going?"
Arvo Definition Short for "afternoon," this term is used to refer to the latter part of the day. Example Sentence The best naps are on the couch in the arvo.
Ripper Definition This term is often used in place of the phrase "really great", and can also be used to express enthusiasm or excitement. Example Sentence It was a ripper of a race, with runners pushing themselves to the limit.
She'll Be Right Definition A common expression to indicate that everything will be okay. Example Sentence Even though she's struggling with the math problems now, with some practice, she'll be right.
Fair Dinkum Definition This phrase is used to emphasise when something is genuine, true, or good. Example Sentence The town's fair dinkum hero single-handedly stood up to the gang of bullies.
Up A Gum Tree Definition To be in a difficult or tricky situation, often implying being stuck or lost. Example Sentence The girl's constant lies got her up a gum tree, and she had to face the consequences.
Spit the Dummy Definition To have a tantrum or a sudden outburst of anger. Example Sentence After some mean words, both girls spat the dummy and refused to apologise to each other.
No worries Definition This phrase is often used to mean "no problem" or "you're welcome". Example Sentence A: "Thanks for holding the door for me!" B: "No worries!"
