IFR Phraseology Training on Simultaneous approach to parallel runways ATCo. Radar Instructor : José Antonio Davila Chapeyquén. Licencia ATS: 426 techniques for instrument flight

Training Overview-FIRST STAGE

Training Objectives

Training Objectives Master IFR Phraseology The training focuses on using standard IFR phraseology during authentic flight communication situations. Enhance Readback Precision Pilots develop their readback accuracy by consistently applying ICAO standard phraseology throughout the drills. Prepare for Emergencies The course prepares pilots to handle emergency and atypical communication situations under IFR conditions. Visualize Cockpit and ATC Interaction Exercises assist pilots in effectively imagining the cockpit environment and their communication with air traffic control.

Training Objectives

Training Objectives ✈️ NTZ: No- Transgression Zone Explained 📌 Definition No- Transgression Zone (NTZ): A designated area between two parallel approach courses where aircraft must not enter . It ensures safe separation during simultaneous independent approaches to parallel runways .

Training Objectives Definition: The Normal Operating Zone (NOZ) is the airspace with defined dimensions that borders the final approach course or track of a published instrument approach procedure. Application in parallel approaches: In independent parallel approaches, only the half of the NOZ that is adjacent to the no transgression zone (NTZ) is used for safety calculations. Source: The term is defined by organizations like the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

IFR Phraseology Exercises

Exercise 1: IFR Clearance Standard IFR Clearance Pilots receive IFR clearance including route, climb altitude, and squawk code from air traffic control. ICAO Phraseology Readback Pilots must perform a full readback using ICAO phraseology to confirm clearance details accurately. Importance of Clarity Clear and complete readbacks ensure all clearance elements are acknowledged to maintain flight safety.

Exercise 1: IFR Clearance

Vocabulary for Aircraft Approaches to Parallel Runways Labels provided in both English and Spanish Heading: "Aircraft Approaches to Parallel Runways / Aproximación a Pistas Paralelas" Key term: "Lateral Separation / Separación Lateral" Key term: "Flight Path / Trayectoria" Key term: "Control Tower / Torre de Control" Key term: "ILS System / Sistema ILS" Key term: "PAPI Lights / Luces PAPI"

Exercise 2: Taxi Instructions Ground Movement Communication Effective communication for taxiing ensures safe movement of aircraft on the ground and prevents collisions. Following Taxi Instructions Pilots must follow taxi instructions precisely, including route via taxiways and holding short of runways. Preventing Runway Incursions Repeating instructions clearly helps avoid runway incursions and promotes safe ground operations.

Types of Aircraft Approach Panels Modular Panels Panel A: Independent simultaneous approach with individual ILS Panel B: Dependent approach adhering to separation standards Panel C: Low-visibility approach with radar vectoring and ATC coordination

Exercise 3: Frequency Change Frequency Change Instruction Pilots receive clear instructions to switch to a specific ATC frequency during flight communication transitions. Acknowledgement Protocol Pilots must accurately acknowledge frequency changes using standard aviation phraseology to confirm understanding. Maintaining Situational Awareness Pilots maintain situational awareness during frequency transitions to ensure flight safety and communication continuity.

Key Points on the Latin American Context Reference Jorge Chávez International Airport (Lima) runways 16L/16R. Mention CORPAC, DGAC Perú, and SENAMHI for coordination. Adapt for civil-military coordination, including FAP operations.

Exercise 4: ILS Approach ILS Approach Procedure The exercise simulates a complete ILS approach with descent, QNH setting, speed reduction, and clearance instructions to follow precisely. Pilot Communication Pilots must accurately read back all ATC instructions including altitude, QNH, speed, and runway clearance for safe approach. Training Objectives This practice enhances pilot skills in managing complex approach scenarios and ensures compliance with Air Traffic Control directives.

Exercise 5: Holding Pattern

Exercise 6: Missed Approach Missed Approach Procedure Pilots must go around and climb to the specified altitude while maintaining runway heading during missed approach. Communication with ATC Pilot contacts departure control on designated frequency as part of missed approach instructions. Readback Accuracy Accurate readback of missed approach instructions is essential for safety and coordination.

Exercise 7: Emergency Communication Emergency Declaration Pilot declares emergency due to engine failure using standard phraseology for clarity and urgency. Request for Assistance Pilot requests vectors and priority landing to ensure safe handling and quick response from air traffic control. Simulation and Training Exercise reinforces correct emergency communication protocol to prepare pilots for high-stress situations.

Exercise 8: Readback Challenge Complex ATC Instructions The exercise involves multi-element instructions including altitude, navigation, and communication frequency changes. Readback Accuracy Pilots must perform readback using correct order and phraseology to ensure clear communication. Skill Testing This challenge assesses a pilot's ability to process and accurately repeat complex ATC instructions.

Phraseology Tips

ICAO Phraseology Guidelines Use of Standard Terms Employ standard ICAO terms like 'Contact', 'Cleared', and 'Maintain' for clarity and consistency in communication. Correct Number Pronunciation Pronounce numbers clearly using ICAO phonetics such as 'tree', 'fife', and 'niner' to avoid confusion. Concise and Clear Transmissions Keep radio transmissions brief and clear to ensure messages are understood without ambiguity. Include Aircraft Callsign Always end transmissions by stating the aircraft callsign to identify the sender clearly.
