Established as College of Engineering in 1961, IIT Delhi was first existing college to be upgraded to an IIT and was declared an Institution of National Importance under the "Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 1963". It was then accorded the status of a deemed university with powers to decide its own academic policies, conduct its examinations, and award its degrees. Introduction IIT Delhi is situated at Hauz Khas in South Delhi, which is a landmark place in the colorful and chequered history of Delhi. Bounded by the Sri Aurobindo Marg on the east, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Complex on the west, the National Council of Educational Research and Training on the south, and the New Ring Road on the north, the Institute campus is flanked by Qutub Minar and the Hauz Khas monuments and is well connected to the major city centers by open and wide roads. The Institute campus is about 19 Km away from the Delhi Main Railway Station, 14 Km from the New Delhi Railway Station, 21 Km from the Inter-State Bus Terminal and 10 Km from Delhi Airport. LOCATION

The architect of this institution was J.K. Chaudhary ( Chaudhary & Gulzar Singh Associates) till 1995. After that the other developmental works shifted to Suresh Goel & Associates from 2000 onwards till date. ARCHITECT The onsite land use is as follows: Academic / institutional areas Housing Student Hostels Recreation Community facilities Open areas Land use IIT Delhi has four entries; one entry is from east, one being from the west and other two are from north in which one entry acts as the main entry and other act as the hostel entry. So the primary circulation flow is through these entries towards the academic area. The offsite land use is as follows: In the north side of the campus we can find a deer park. And towards east side, office area. In west and south side we can find housing area. Zoning in IIT Delhi Though each department is a separate entity with a courtyard around, all the departments constitutes an integrated complex. Heavy engineering laboratories are placed on the ground floor, light laboratories on the first floor while the tutorial rooms, classrooms and project rooms are located on the second floor. Separate offices have been provided to every member of the teaching staff next to his laboratory. Large lecture theatres with modern amenities and equipment for sound and projection are located in the courtyards between departments for common use. The campus also offers amenities like staff club, hospital, shopping centre, bank, post office, telecom centre, community centre, stadium, playing fields, Zoning The campus of the Institute extends to an area of 320 acres. With many topographical features, imaginatively laid out with picturesque landscape, numerous buildings of various nature and stature, and clean and wide roads, the campus presents a spectacle of harmony in architecture and natural beauty. The campus area has been divided into four functional zones which are as follows: Residential zone for students; Residential zone for the faculty and staff; Academic zone for academic buildings and workshops; and Cultural-cum-social and recreational zone for students. The site being longitudinal in shape, the last two zones have been located mid-way between the two residential zones in order to reduce walking distance. The main academic building accommodates various teaching and research activities. ACADEMIC CORE

Academic Area: It includes institutes’ Main building (multi storey),Block1, Block2, Block3, Block4, Block5, Block6,Block 7, Block 8, Central library, Textile Technology, State bank of India, Workshop ,Cafeteria building, Sports pavilion, IIT hospital and Auditorium. Main Building is 8 storeys high and houses the offices of all the deans and other administrative offices and conference halls. The material used for construction is Brick cladded with Dhaulpur stone which is beige in color and requires less maintenance. The main block is connected to the academic block The academic blocks are linear blocks and are connected by corridors and bridges to go through every block and in-between two blocks a courtyard is present and it is landscaped. All academic blocks are planned in a compact manner. The blocks are divided into six parts according the need of the space required for the department placed. The library is located on the alone block near the academic and administrative block. Design composition of IIT Delhi
