Immune response Three lines of defence

Discuss! When was the last time you were sick? What happened to your body (symptoms) How long did it take you to recover?

The immune system can be broken down into 3 basic lines of defence against pathogens First line of defence Second line of defence Third line of defence

First line of defence Surface barriers that prevent entry into the body. These include skin, mucus and tears Second line of defence Inflammatory response caused by white blood cells. They surround and engulf pathogens. This leads to inflammation and fever. Third line of defence Specific antibodies are produced to fight off infection. The next time your body fights the same pathogen, it can work faster or be immune. Draw yourself in your book and copy the 3 lines of defence

What are antigens and antibodies? Antigen- a harmful substance which enters the body which causes the body to make antibodies as a response to fight disease. An example of an antigen is the common cold. Antibody- produced by the immune system to help stop intruders from harming the body, the immune system springs into action.

Recap of immune response

What about autoimmune diseases?

Use this site to look at different immune system responses https://www.edumedia-sciences.com/en/node/39-immune-system

Ready, set, infect! You will recreate the epic fight between pathogens and the immune system in our classroom . You will find instructions for the game on this site: https://www.scienceinschool.org/content/ready-set-infect

Construct a diagram of the ready, set, infect game you just played and explain the process of our immune response. Make sure you use correct terminology. What did students represent ?

What if your body could not produce antibodies to fight off disease? Meet ‘the boy in the bubble’ Can you imagine living 12 years of your life in a bubble?
