5. TREES are erect plants with single woody stem capable of
reaching a height of 20-25 feet upon reaching maturity.
Trees, like animals , are part of our ecosystem. They help
maintain what we call an ecological balance. What is ecological
balance? One example is this: Trees give off oxygen and take in
carbon dioxide, while man gives off carbon dioxide and takes
oxygen. Here you see a give and take relationship between tree
and man. Nothing goes to waste.

6. Another example: waste of animals and plants
like carabao manure, chicken dung,
and dead leaves and twigs mix with the soil to
decompose and become compost or fertilizer.
This fertilizer sustains the plants and trees
with nutrients which they need to grow, to
bear fruits, and to provide food for man.
Ecological balance allows every living thing in
nature to survive for as long as we take care of
each other. What can you do to maintain
ecological balance.

COMMUNITY
Trees are valuable to the family and the community for the
products and amenities that give such as:
1.Food like fruits, vegetables, nuts and sugar.
2.Wood used as fuel for cooking and heating.
3.Construction materials which include lumber, plywood,
and board.
4.Fiber for the production of pulp and paper.
5.Chemical products such as resin, rubber, and turpentine.

9. There are benefits derived from trees to
maintain a healthy environment. Some of
these benefits include the following:
1.They provide shade and an air of
freshness around the house, along the
streets and surroundings. Trees are very
much needed by people in these times of
climate change when the temperature is
high and the heat of the sun becomes
intense. Without trees, there are no shades
to keep us cool.

10. 2. They protect the soil from
erosion. Have you seen big roots
that extend several meters from
the trunk or go deeper into the
soil? These roots hold the soil,
preventing it from eroding when
rain or floods come.

11. 3. The root system promotes soil
stability. This means that the soil
held by the roots remain there
and does not erode.
4. They serve as valuable wildlife
habitats. Wild animals live in
places with many trees like in the
forest.

12. 5. They serve as windbreakers during
typhoons and storms, thus reducing the
destruction of homes and agricultural
crops . A Typhoon that is strong usually
moves at a fast speed. It continues to be
that strong if there are no barriers on the
path where it moves. But when it passes
barriers like mountains and trees, t slows
down and its speed is reduced. Small crops
and plants as well as houses are safe when
a typhoon is weak.

13. 6. They help reduce pollutions in
congested urban areas. Remember
that trees take in the carbon
dioxide that is emitted by vehicles
that belch smoke. The more trees ,
the less carbon dioxide there is in
the air.

14. 7. They contribute to the beautiful
landscapes in the city and the
countryside. Imagine a land with
plenty of trees and grass and a
scattering of flowers of beautiful
colors, sizes, and shapes. This is
Greenery we all love to stay and
live in.

15. 8. They improve the atmosphere of
a place by giving a feeling of
freshness and coolness as they
reduce temperature. Which would
you choose: a big, modern house
in the middle of a barren land, or a
cozy little home with a garden full
of flowers and trees.

17. 10. They prevent river and lake sedimentation. Have you
observed a riverbank that is lined endlessly with full grown
trees.? These trees help hold the water in the lake and river
and keep it there. This prevents the lake and river from drying
up.
11. They prevent floods. Floods occur when water from rain
rushes in causing soil erosion. However, if there are trees to
serve as barriers and roots to hold the water, flood will not
occur.

18. IMPORTANCE OF DEVELOPING THE SKILLS IN PLANTING TREES AND
FRUIT-BEARING TREES
1.You can motivate others by teaching them to plant trees.
2.Plant as many fruit-bearing and other trees in your backyard and in vacant lots to
help the community in its beautification campaigns.
3.Fruits of fruit-bearing- trees are a good source of sugar, vitamins and minerals,
and other substances which have antioxidants and anti-cancer properties.
4.It can be a source of livelihood. By propagating trees, you can see them as
seedlings. This can be a start of a profitable business.
5.Raising trees for sale brings added income to the family.
6.It can give employment to others once the business prospers.

His mango orchard is one of the most prosperous
mango orchards in the barrio. Besides the good profit, it has
provided employment to many residents in the barrio.
2 Ben M. Santos- Jackfruit Orchard

Ben ‘s uncle owned a five hectare farm where jackfruit
trees are planted. The farm is well known among residents of
the town because their jackfruit is much sought after by the
vendor and owners of small industries making fruit preserves.

21. MARKET DEMANDS FOR FRUITS
Planting fruit trees is a profitable business if one puts
his/her full attention, and has technical knowledge and skill in
planting coupled with hard work and determination. The
demand for fruits in the local and international market
continues to be high because more people realize the
importance of fruits in the diet. Nowadays, people across ages
are becoming more and more health conscious. They realize
the importance of good nutrition in promoting good health.
Fruits are high in vitamins and minerals as well as fiber. They
are part of the daily intake of most Filipino and people across
the world. That is why the demand for fruits in the market
remains high.

orchard growers in your community/ adjacent community,
in your hometown province, or any part of the country.
Gather as much information about the orchard grower
(as an entrepreneur); what he/she produces; where
his/her product are marketed and how they are marketed;
the demand for his/her products and forth. You may also
research on some tips for his/her successful orchard growing
project; You may also share these gathered information to
the class via slide presentation. At the end, compare all
successful orchard growers on the board and find some
similarities/ commonalities in their business that made them
successful.
